This is a very good novel. It is very interesting to read about struggles and hardship about the main character. Amber in this novel is very selfish and don't have much respect for her sister Heather. Amber need to look on her behaviour. Go buy right now. It is great novel fot those people who love to read about Humanity and love.

4.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF HER BEST!!, May 25, 2007
Angel of Hope by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book if you like a romantic adventure. Lurlene McDaniel has written many books but I personally think this is one of her best. This is a wonderful book. I didn't want to put it down until I was finished reading it. It is a spectacular book about a young girl, Amber, who goes to Africa because her sister Heather became very ill and couldn't go back. She meets the people that Heather talked so greatly about from her trip on the Mercy Ship. Africa isn't at all what amber thought it out to be. She stayed with Paul and Jodene as Heather did on her trip. Amber soon met Boyce Callahan he was there working on a project. They quickly became friends. But is Amber ready for what Africa has in store for her next?

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful Review, October 24, 2006
A Kid's Review
Heather Barlow, the main character in Angel of Mercy, was back from Africa as a missoionary, and was trying to readjust to the big Miami lifestyle she used to be acustomed to. Although she was happy to return home to her family, she could not forget about losing her beloved Ian, or about little baby Alice, the child that she rescued that needed surgery. Heather was so sad to leave, nothing could detour her mind from returning, so she talks her mkom into returning with her, this would help because her mom is a surgeon. Her mother decides to go. A week before they leave Heather becomes ill, Amber her sister found her lying in a pool of blood on their bathroom floor. Heather's plans are then shattered because the doctor orders to stay in bed for at least two weeks. Seeing how upset her siter is about being away from Africa, Amber decides to take her place. When Amber arrives in Africa, she has no clue what to expect or what fate has in store for her.........

I loved this book, I loved the fact that it touched me so much. I cried reading the very end of it. I never expected what happened to happen because until the end it had you guessing. On a scale of 1-5 stars i would give it a 10, it was absoluetly beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Returning to Africa, February 18, 2005
A Kid's Review
This is the continuation from Angel of Mercy. When Heather returns from Africa her life is not the same. She lost Ian her first love and worries about Alice the little girl with the cleft palate that she helped save. Now, Heather wishes to return to Africa and this time her mother is to go with her, to give baby Alice the surgury she so desperatly needs. But just before Heather and her mom are supposed to leave for Africa Heather becomes critically ill and becomes not able to go. In her place goes her sister Amber. Amber only goes because school is boring her and she thinks it will be an easy out. But when Amber and her mother arrive in Africa, she knows that it won't be.She also meets Boyce, Heathers friend as well as Kia. Over the time they are in Africa many things change Amber's perspective and she also comes to like Boyce as more then a friend. But, she's not in the US anymore and in Africa there is much more to think about then boys as Amber quickly realizes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angel of Hope, April 22, 2004

Lauren (Austin, IN USA) - See all my reviews
I have never been to Africa before but novelist Lurlene McDaniel made me believe I was there in some of the harshest times of diseases going around. Amber Barlow goes half around the world to Africa. She finds out about environments are around her that she doesn't have to live in them. She feels what it's like to change people's lives and to see death right in front of her. Death is that hardest thing to her to overcome; maybe she can't overcome it at all! You will have to read the book, Angel of Hope to find out for yourself.

Towards the end of the book, Heather comes down with a life - threatening illness. This makes Amber's trip come to an end faster than it was going to. She comes home to be with her sister and help her through everything. I like they way Amber and Heather come together and have a good relationship at the end. These type things just want to make you keep turning the pages to see what happens!

Boyce is a good-looking boy who is in Africa also on a missionary trip and at first acts like a friend to Amber. Months later, things begin to change with his and her feelings both. Boyce is a big help to her while she is there. He tells her things that truly help her in the long run!

The reason I liked this book and enjoyed it so much was because of all the relationships that go on between the people in Africa and Amber's family. Amber's mom decides to tag along and go operate on the kids and adults there with disabilities and people that has problems with they way they look.

Angel of Hope is a great book for young adult readers. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in books about death, dying, and relationships, as in other words sad books.

Notes about Lurlene McDaniel...

Lurlene McDaniel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. McDaniel started writing novels 25 years ago. Her son was near death from un-diagnosed juvenile diabetes. She researched the disease and that's what inspired her to write stories about illness and death.

McDaniel has written over 40 novels. Lurlene's most popular books are Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, and Six Months to Live. The book Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep won the romance writer award for best YA Romance in 1992. Lurlene McDaniel's newest book at this point is the Time Capsule.

Lurlene mostly writes about cancer, death, and dying because, young adults are curious about such things and hardly ever talk about it. In Lurlene's books she doesn't use real people, but they act as if they are real in the book with feelings and everything else. Lurlene says, "Always realize that no matter how sad life is, it is always worth living!"

5.0 out of 5 stars This book made me think a lot!, September 8, 2003
This book is like the best book in the world. After I read it, I kept thinking about it so much. I was reviewing most of the words and you can picture what she trying to say in you mind. It has gotten me to think a lot and I thought that maybe I would like to work with kids like Heather and Amber did. I would also like to fall in love like they did. That would be awesome. I hope that when you read this, you get the same feeling as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't put it down, it's a book you'll read over and over!, October 23, 2001
By A Customer
I have started to collect Lurlene McDaniel books because they make me laugh, they make cry, they make me feel as if I know and can feel the characters, and her books warms your heart and soul. I don't think I can say one bad thing about her books and Angel of Hope is no exception.
When Heather becomes ill and her mother won't let her go back to Uganda; Amber, her sister, goes in her place. Amber doesn't want to like Africa and she pretends she doesn't until she meets Boyce, Patrick and Ruth. They get into a situation that really tests Amber and her values of life and friendship. Upon returning to the United States, she finds out that Hearther is in no better condition than when she left. Amber struggles with life and the harsh true that she might not see her sister or friends from Uganda again.
I strongly recommend Angel of Hope. It's one of Lurlene McDaniel's best books yet. Life has its ups and downs. Her books portray life as it really is, not how people want it to be. So, you ask why do you want to read a book like that when you are trying to escape from life's problems! That's an easy one. If you have a problem, read one of McDaniel's books to inspire you or make you feel as if someone understands even when it seems no one does. Angel of Hope was well written and easy to read. Read it and I gurantee that you will love this book. I hate reading but Lurlene McDaniel's books put fun back into reading. Angel of Hope is good for people of all ages. So get off the computer and go to the library and check it out. If you really want to take my advise, put it into your amazon shopping chart and buy it or beg your parents to buy it if you aren't old enough to have a shopping cart. Believe me, you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and very sweet, April 15, 2007
After reading the first book in this series, I couldnt wait to read about Ambers story. I felt a lot like Amber, she doesnt know what she wants to do with her life after high school. I enjoyed the way that she grew throughout the story and know that her future held something bigger then she thought possable. This is a series that all Lurlene fans will want to read. Not only does this book talk about a world that most people never hear about, but it shows young woman that its ok to learn to spread your wings and fly. I truly enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to reading more book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars *Touched*, November 14, 2005
A Kid's Review
Angel of Hope, talks about Heather dying. Her sister, Amber has decided to go on her journey and follow her sister`s shadow on her way to Uganda. She meets the most wonderful thing in her life, courage and love. Its an amazing book! Now, it`s been three weeks since I`ve read it, and yet I think about it everyday and keep on thinking about the special quotes Lurlene had put in this dramatic and romantic book. I`m currently reading "How I love thee" and the three stories stored inside, are the ones that you will never forget in your life. :) Lurlene McDaniel is the best author ever!
