Superb reading!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Angel in Scarlet (Paperback)
This is the best Jennifer Wilde book by far. It's about Angela Howard, a School-teacher's daughter who becomes the toast of London on the stage of 18th cent. She even gets painted by Gainsborough, meets many famous people from that era and becomes wealthy. It is written from the piont of view of Angela and you would truely belive she was a real living breathing person.

I can read this again and again,

I read this one when I was 14, and have since read it again. I change my mind about who she should be with each time. The heroine can survive on her own anyway, and she proves it over and over. A good read.

So many hearts, so little time...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Angel in Scarlet (Paperback)
So many hearts broken in so little time. This book was wonderful in the fact that the ending was unpredictable. Angel doesn't mourn pitifully for a lost love throughout the entire book, as we see in so many others (including other Wilde books), and it is resolved quite well. Angel is a very believeable and loveable character with many strong traits. One thing I love about this book is the constant presence of what amounts to be a childhood nuisance. You'll have to see for yourself! It's definitely a great read.

RIP Jennifer Wilde - Thank you for such a wonderful romance,
By
This review is from: Angel in Scarlet (Paperback)
This novel, far and away, blew away my standards for a romance novel. Whereas a lot of romance novels are straightforward and not very complicated, Jennifer Wilde inserts very three dimensional characters and poignant incidents that wrenches one's heart. This book is definitely bittersweet, engaging, and highly recommended.
There are a few notable differences in this book from other novels I have read. One of them is that the author writes in the first person point of view. As a romance reader, I am not used to this but, honestly, it hardly mattered. The story was just so engaging. If I could, I would give this book 6 stars, as it stands high above the normal fare of romance novels I've read today. This coming of age novel follows the life of, first a girl, and then a woman by the name of Angela Howard who first encounters a young, innocent love but learns to let it go due to the circumstances of life. Despite the obstacles and heartbreak, she still follows her dreams to lead a very fulfilling life involving three different men in different periods of her life. She's brazen and direct, but still very sweet and lovable. I cannot begin to describe everything contained in this 600-page book except to say that the descriptions are detailed, the dialogue is wonderfully witty, and you will not regret reading this classic. As a side note, I find it very sad that the author passed away more than a decade ago but am grateful to have discovered such a treasure in romance novels. [...]

Where's the Romance,
By
This review is from: Angel in Scarlet (Paperback)
While many readers gave this book a high rating, I kept asking myself where's the romance? Angela may have loved Hugh first but I'm not sure she really knew the meaning of love any better than Hugh. Her liaison with Jamie ended badly. Then she had a second chance with Hugh but because she refused to see his need to reclaim what he felt belonged to him, she told him it was over when he walked out the door for Italy. I loathed her marriage to Clinton Meredith. She had hated him in her youth and he tried to buy her from her stepmother, yet she did an about face and married him professing her pitiful little love. While she slept with them all, I failed to discern an intimate emotional relationship in any of these cases. This was a 600 page that entertained but did not leave me satisfied. I wish I could have adored the characters rather than tired of their back and forth I love you in words but not actions. In the end, she walked out on the one man she was supposed to have loved mind, body and soul. This just does not ring true. Maybe I'm having problems with it because I would not have given up the man I'd wanted since my youth. Of course, I wouldn't have married his cousin either. While the book has some interesting twists, it focuses too much on its setting and not enough on the characters. Of course, it is vintage and not great vintage when compared to Kathleen Woodiwiss or Johanna Lindsey. The ending simply left me dissatisfied.

Memorable!,

I first read this book as a young teenager--it was one of MANY books I read back then. Two decades later, I have read hundreds of romance novels. Angel in Scarlet stayed with me. I thought about it again in my early twenties and had to buy it. I've read it three times since and actually came here to see if there was a kindle version (my book is buried and we're in the process of moving.)
From the moment Angie is spying on her crush from the tree and tangles with her future love interest, I fell in love with her. You get to watch her grow and mature over the course of the book. Jennifer has a gift of making people laugh and cry, and truly experience the pain of the heroine. Like another reviewer stated, I also have sided with different love interests each time I've read it! This is really the only romance book that I've never gotten tired of reading. Corrina

Do you love history with your romance? Love strong heroines and dark, brooding heroes? Then grab yourself a copy of "Angel in Scarlet", because you're in for a real treat! Join Angela Howard, the "Angel in Scarlet" as she matures from awkward plain Jane to a brilliant, beautiful, celebrated actress and confident woman. Torn between the love of her past and the loves of her present, she must decide at the last who really is her True Love. You might be surprised who she picks!
Note: she would *not* have known how to ride a horse, she probably wouldn't have even *owned* a horse as a schoolteacher's daughter in mid-1700s England. It was a social class thing.

Received well packed and in excellent condition. The book was in great shape. I haven't finished the book, but so far it's been boring and I'm in the 200+ page range. This is my daughter's favorite romance book so I bought this hardbound one for her as a present.

I definetly would recommwend this book to anyone who loves books that
1)are different from the normal romance 2)a great read! This book is set during the time right before the regency period. not quite sure how much before. i really like tthe fact theres not nobles walking back and forth. i love those books, but every so often, i need a change. And did i get it! Angel is not your typical main heroine in a few ways. Shes not the most beautiful woman, althoughs shes striking(lets face it, most women in romance are at least attractive). And, she stands on her own two feet when things get rough. i loved her spunkiness, that enables her to stand up to people. And her love interests are each so different. Read this book its great!@

The Best Historical Romance I've Read,
This review is from: Angel in Scarlet (Paperback)
I received this book used in a big romance novel lot I won off of Ebay years ago and had never read the book until now. I guess I was hesitant to because the cover looked so corny and it was 600 pages long! But I am so glad I did give it a chance because...WOW. This is one of the best books I've ever read. It was so entertaining and lovely...all of the characters were so believable and well-defined and loveable. Angie/Angela/Angel, the heroine seemed so much like a real person and I felt every emotion she felt, loved as she loved, cried when she cried. There were so many twists and turns and surprises, and I laughed and I cried and I loved it all. The love scenes were so beautifully written and the author just has a knack for conveying all those emotions so well.
Wonderful book! I'm sure I'll be re-reading this year after year. It is a timeless story one can never grow tired of. |
