3.0 out of 5 stars She's Got Truth On Her Mind
Natalie Cole opens up and tells a whole lot more than the conventional show business personality does in this eye-opening autobiography. She talks candidly about her life, family, career, friendships, marriages and, oh yes, she goes into some mighty detail about her now derailed drug habit. Kudos to Ms. Cole for her bravery and honesty in recounting her choices along the...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cole legacy lives on!!, October 26, 2000

Natalie Cole, versatile superstar singer and daughter of the unforgettable Nat "King" Cole, chronicles her amazing life in this autobiography. Frank and revealing, Natalie tells about growing up in a famous family; the devastating effects of losing her father when she was 15; her descent into drug abuse and how it nearly destroyed her life and career; her complex relationship with her mother, Maria Cole; the phenomenon of her comeback with the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning UNFORGETTABLE...WITH LOVE CD, a loving dedication to her father; an abusive marriage, her struggle to uphold her family legacy, and much more. This book is honest and sincere, and although it may seem as if in some parts she's venting, well, maybe it's because she needed to. It made me laugh out loud, shed some tears, and definitely made me think...because many of her experiences mirrored ones in my life as well. Not everyone may have grown up as the child of Nat King Cole, but there are situations in this book I feel everybody can identify with. If it's not happening to you, it's a sure bet that you know someone who went through it, or is going through it. Highly recommended.

What can I say? This is a book by a woman that has shown us not only can she sing but she can act as well. But now we see she's a writer too! With that aside this book had me laughing, it had me on the verge of tears. It had me shaking my head that one person could go through so much and still be here to talk about it! She is truly an open person when it came to sharing her life with us. Grab a copy of this book!

I truly enjoyed reading Natalie Cole "Angel On My Shoulder: An Autobiography". Although Natalie had many obstacles to overcome she had a very privileged life. She talked very candidly about her relationship with her mother and siblings. I felt sad reading that Natalie's mother was not a nurturing , supportive person when Natalie really needed her. However, I was elated to read how Natalie overcome all the hurdles in her path and turned her life around to be a more productive person. This book is one of encouragement for people with addictions who think there is no hope. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is an Amazing Inspiration and So Is Natalie!, May 29, 2004

Natalie shares with astounding truth, humbleness, and shows us all how much she has been through, and how she - with the Divine help in her life - has triumphed from the darkest days. This book is an astounding beacon of hope for anyone who has been through both the highs and lows of life, and wants to genuinely rise from within.
Natalie shares much about her childhood, her relationship with her relatives, and so much about her own life, and how many times she thought it was all over for her, only to see that she can rise again - no matter what she has been through.

On a personal note, in 1995 I had dinner with Natalie, her candor and honesty took me back so much that I wrote about her with deep respect in my own book, `Individual Power'. She is a true soul, and I have the utmost respect for her, the courage she has shown, and how she is a beacon of hope for others.

If you want to read a book about one incredible woman, who humbly and candidly shows how no matter what you go through, you CAN triumph, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is a gift that will touch you because of its authenticity.

Thank you Natalie for being a beacon of Light and Hope for so many. Keep Going Girl - You are One Awesome Gem!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational!, January 9, 2003
By

I thought this was a very good book. very inspirational. it basically charts the ups & many downs of the life of Singer Natalie Cole. Starting with the death of her father Legend Nat King Cole-- which was the catalyst of her drug addiction in her adult life--to her comback in the 90's. Although she charts her drug use, recovery & situations in the music industry, she skimmed over the family details of her personal life. Details that I think wouldve added more drama to this tale. I would've liked to hear more about what went on w/ her & her mother, who's old school sterness clashed w/ Natalies open mindedness. Ms. Cole dosent say much except for the occasional "me and my mom weren't getting along during this period" excerps & almost nothing of her twin sisters & adopted brother (which by the way, i never even knew existed!). Sister Cookie is also a blur. She mentions in 2 brief pages the story of her brother but it wouldve been interesting to hear more. I truly appreciated her knowledge on God and the credit she gives Him for helping her through it all. He has certainly blessed her many times in her life. The comeback & accolades she acheived with her album "Unforgettable" was the icing on the cake after all that she went through. I'm glad I picked this book up.

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK GOD FOR ANGELS!, November 13, 2000

Angel On My Shoulder is a poignant autobiography of multi-talented Ms. Natalie Cole. The book covers her life past to present and let me tell ya, it's a miracle Natalie is still alive today; thanks to God's angels. Natalie candidly talks about her drug abuse, negligence as a mother, two failed marriages, finding God, and many tribulations and triumphs in her 25 year recording career. I truly admire Ms. Cole for having the courage to write her story and share it with us. This is a truly inspiring book that I got alot out of through Ms. Coles wisdom to get her life in order. God Bless you Natalie, much love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully entertaining & spiritually satisfying read, November 5, 2000
By
Cydney Rax "rmn1994" (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
I love a well-written and insightful celebrity autobiography, and "Angel On My Shoulder" by Natalie Cole more than meets expectations. A good celebrity autobio will have plenty of pertinent details: family background, how they became successful, little known secets, name dropping, & cherished memories. In this book, Natalie provides humorous and sensitive detail: things that will make you laugh out loud (all the many times she was saved from tragedy via angels), things that will shock you (her darkened drug addicted days), and things that will make you think (she had a male friend who was on the brink of death, only to miraculously recover; but when he refused to acknowledge that God had healed him, the man up and died -- just like that.)

I loved Natalie's candidness and her words of wisdom that she inserts in her book. She admits that everything in her life isn't perfect -- she's still learning and I admire that.

I believe anyone who reads this book will come away with a greater insight into the life of a famous singer, and you'll also be more aware of the angels that may be present in your own life. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

This book is a great read. I could not put it down. It is a in-depth portrayal of Natalie's life and you learn a lot about the music industry. The tidbits about her love for her father Nat and her spirituality really moved me. Reading this book was like being on an emotional rollercoaster. My only hope is that one last angel will intervene to permanently heal the wounds between Natalie and her mother.
