the ultimate singer!,
By L'auteur "L'auteur" (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angel Sings (Audio CD)
Della Reese is the ultimate performer. Her voice is beyond description:amazingly powerful, expressive with flawless elocution and most original articulation, that requires much taste to be appreciated by real connoissers! Each song is a unique composition and none is like the other. After you listened to Della, the other blues or jazz stars seem colourless, despite their own qualities, they all are outcasted by Della's incredible temperament and talent. She is the alpha and the omega of song:she can sing everything, from gospel, blues to jazz and even classical music!!Della reese is without contest the BEST singer in the world! She has the trumpets of Jericho in her voice, and sings like an angel! She makes songs alive, she is not only an entertainer (actually the best) but she delivers a message in singing,of life, passion and joy.She is true and authentic and once you heard her,she put a spell on you forever! Moreover, she is gorgeous, and charismatic!Della Reese is the ultimate diva!

Her Transitional Phase,
This review is from: Angel Sings (Audio CD)
The early '70s were a tough time for singers like Della. The kind of Traditional Pop she had been singing since the early '50s was no longer in fashion, and it was rapidly being replaced by rock, soul and early r&b. For Della, however, it was not a diffifcult transition, as she had always been blending styles like nobody else. Still, chart success did not come easily, and despite the fact she recorded some truly funky albums, success was hard to find. This collection is the only album to feature tracks from that period. It gathers tracks from various of singles and albums. "Black Is Beautiful" is a great album, and this album features some of its best tracks, namely her cover of "Pen in Hand" and "Games People Play". I do however miss songs like "Cycles" and "Comment", both of which are great country-influenced tracks. "Right Now" is her best album of the period, and her version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" is simply magic. In "Billy My Love" she really lets loose, and the result is some truly amazing notes. Her cover of Newman's "Love Story" is sentimental, but joyous. "Leftover Wine" is like butter, but the exclusion of "Something" is a big mistake. She handles George Harrison's classic with gentle grace. So, if you are at all interest in this phase of Della's recording career, this is the (and only) album to get. Let's hope that some label decides to give these albums some attention, and release them on CD. Lesser albums by lesser singers have certainly been given unfair attention at the expense of some truly talented artists. |
