Book Description

March 10, 1998 The Los Angeles Times (Book 2)
This extra-value collection of 200 Los Angeles Times Sunday crosswords is a great bargain for anyone who loves fun-filled, pun-filled puzzles. The first omnibus collection from the LA Times was amazingly popular, and this second volume follows right in its footsteps.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, too big, not recommended, August 9, 2008
By
MJ "MJ" (Lincoln, NE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Los Angeles Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus, Volume 2 (The Los Angeles Times) (Paperback)
I guess I take crosswords too seriously. I want to relax when I do a puzzle, and I find the errors in this collection too agitating. It ruins the fun. Possibly I'm spoiled by the New York Times, and should stick to those in the future. If you don't mind missing clues, misnumbered clues, misspellings ("Just deserts" = 'DUE'), or clues and answers that are the same ("Takes away" = "TAKESAWAY"), then you might enjoy these puzzles more than I. Too often, incredibly obscure clues meet and make the puzzle unsolvable, a problem you never have with Will Shortz and gang. Also, the book is huge and difficult to keep opened. I hate having to fight with this book! It's too unwieldy for a puzzle before nodding off in bed. I think I've had it with this one, I'll get something better and chuck this one tomorrow*. (* I should have chucked it, did one more puzzle and found "Husker's home" = "IOWA"!!! Sacrilege! Now it's straight into the fireplace.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Puzzles, January 2, 2009
This review is from: Los Angeles Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus, Volume 2 (The Los Angeles Times) (Paperback)
I had a great time solving all 200 while on the 'throne'. Being an Angeleno I've always cut Sylvia & Barry some slack, the wieldiness, or lack thereof, of their tomes notwithstanding. And it sure beats buying the unwieldy (left-wing) Times for a single puzzle. As for NY Times' Shortz, I find him to be arrogantly obscure, assuming his 'solvers' hold Master's degrees at the very least.
