The crosswords by these authors that comes in the Sunday Los Angeles Times are my favorite ones of all. They aren't as difficult as the ones in the New York Times and yet they are quite challenging. In other words, just right, at least for me. They have themes and tricky clues to keep things interesting. One of these books will last me quite a few months, as I work on them on & off. The spiral book lays flat and they are printed on nice white paper. These make good gifts for crossword fans.

Fun puzzles that can be maddening,

For years I've been doing LA Times Sunday crosswords. There's a great deal of wordplay involved in these and sometimes they are downright maddening. Sometimes I laugh at the cleverness of the long answers and how they relate to the puzzle's title; the clues themselves not infrequently lead me astray but are a delight once I figure out the answer. They make you think outside the box. Occasionally I want to throw my arms up in frustration and tell myself surely they make these words up as they go (they don't . . . I check the dictionary.) About the time I'm ready to throw the book in the trash the next puzzle is easier and I'm in love with them all over again. On a practical note, I love the spiral bindings.

Not as challenging as NY Times Sunday Xwords, but ok if you like puzzles involving puns, word play, etc.

Frustration,

I regularly troll Amazon seeking LARGE PRINT crossword puzzles. Once again, these puzzles are NOT large print. They probably are wonderful for people with good or correctable vision. My complaint is not the puzzle itself; rather, I am complaining about its classification as large print. If you truly are looking for large print crosswords for people who are visually impaired, please do not purchase either the LA Times or the Chicago Tribune puzzles. |
