Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Angelina meets a new friend in Angelina and Alice by Katharine Holabird, illus. by Helen Craig. After a grand beginning, the friends go through a bumpy patch when Alice sides with some older kids who mock Angelina's handstand abilities. Luckily, Alice comes through in the end. Craig's illustrations are as winsome as ever as she chronicles the heroine's emotional roller-coaster ride.

My mom and dad read these books to me when I was little. I believe we had Angelina Ballerina, Angelina and Alice, Angelina's Christmas, and Angelina and the Princess. I'm 28 now and these books are just as great as I remember them. Every time I spot them on my parents' bookshelf, I have to pull one out and flip through the pages.

The stories are charming but hardly arbitrary. Another reviewer mentioned the lessons in the books aren't "preachy", which is true. But the best part is the illustrations. They are so detailed, whimsical and beautiful. I remember wishing I could visit Angelina's world and when I revisit the pictures now, they're still just as beautiful.

These are essential to any children's book library.

In "Angelina and Alice", Angelina meets a new friend Alice and they bond, but when Alice joins another group of friends and teases her, Angelina feels left out. Things work out in the end, and the pair form a close friendship. The Angelina series of books are adorable, and the beautiful and detailed illustrations possess an old-world charm that endears the books to children. The books are great for reading aloud to preschoolers and up, and will appeal most to little girls who love ballet, and young children who love stories about cute little mice!

This book was on my son's reading list for school so I though alright. But I was amazed to find that he enjoyed the story. My son is autistic and can not speak or understand very well but when I finished this story he looked at me with a question and said "Mouse friends?". Now he asks for this story often at bed time. This is a good book for beginner readers and younger and I enjoyed it as well.

Angelina books each add something. Never just fluff. Not just a need to create another story with a minimal variation. Sometimes she leads and in this instance learns her own significance and that she does fit in. If a parent talks of this story it can be used to illustrate emotions, ups and downs. the fickleness of people and the many cycles of life. The art work for many reasons is always a treat.

Whoa, has Amazon got the age range wrong here. I think some teenage girls might even enjoy this story. Certainly my children did -- 3 and 5 years of age.

"Angelina and Alice" is a lovely story about friendship and how even the best of friendships can hit a bump or two along the road. In this tale Angelina is made fun of because she can't do a decent handstand. The older girls hurt her feelings by laughing at her efforts on the playground, but what really makes her sad is when Alice joins the other girls in making fun of her.

We don't know what thoughts Alice has, but soon she repents her harsh actions and is back to help Angelina as she practices and practices to get the handstand just right. And when the school puts on a show at the Village Festival even the older girls have to give a hand to the great performance of Angelina and Alice.

Five Stars. A good read-aloud and a fine story of friendship. I particularly like the fact that importance of practicing is emphasized. And far from being a book for preschoolers, I think this is a book for 5 year olds on up. In fact, even a mommy can enjoy it.

beautifully illustrated, heartwarming childrens stories. Even though the Angelina stories are geared towards girls, my little boy, at 8, enjoyed these as well, especially when mom read to him. These are good stories to read to your child at bedtime.

The artwork is detailed and delightful to look at-you'll see new things each time you look, and children love that that every scene is filled with many little mice.

This Angelina story deals with how it feels when we are sometimes left out, bullied, or when a "best friend" chooses to play with other children. Each book is filled with wonderful life lessons told in a gentle, non preachy way.

I highly recommend this series for any child.

5 stars!
