PreSchool-Grade 1—What is it about the "Angelina" books that children find so satisfying? In addition to illustrations full of charming details discovered over many readings and a generous appearance of pink tutus and ballet slippers, it's probably this character's spunk and persistence. In this story, while chugging along on her grandparents' canal boat, the mouseling is determined to "think up a special dance." At first, her grandparents gently remind her that all paws are needed "on deck," then sternly suggest that sailors are too busy to dance, and so it goes until Angelina tumbles into a can of oil and ruins her costume. As in the previous books, there is a lesson to learn, and supportive adults are reassuringly present to help guide the resourceful mouse as she arrives at a solution to her problem. Angelina is absolutely thrilled to have the chance to dance at the Mouseland Dance Festival in front of an entire audience. She practices all the way there, right aboard her grandparents' canal boat, as they concentrate on working hard. Unfortunately, she's so consumed by perfecting her performance, that she ends up wreaking havoc on board, and upsetting everything, and everyone that gets in her way. Now something terrible has happened, and it just might stop Angelina from being the star of the show.

As usual Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig have created another immensely enjoyable new ANGELINA BALLERINA book. Angelina is as cute, and precocious as ever, and her antics display it wonderfully. Katharine Holabird's fast-moving, easy-to-understand language will help young readers to understand everything that is going on within the story, while Helen Craig's magnificent illustrations will let readers see all of the written words acted out. Overall, ANGELINA, STAR OF THE SHOW is a wonderful new book for children, that must be in everyone's home library.

We have a three year old granddaughter who loves the Angelina books. We read them to her over and over. Angelina, Star of the Show, is one of her favorites. Angelina is traveling on her grandparents' canal boat to the Mouse Land Dance Festival. Of course, as usual, she is so focused on her dancing that she gets into several messes on the boat. With the help of her grandparents she manages to extricate herself and to go on to a successful festival. It's a good story, and the pictures do an excellent job of helping the tale along.
