The Los Angeles Angels Live Again, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Angels: Los Angeles in the Pacific Coast League, 1919-1957 (Paperback)
The "other" Angels baseball team comes to life in this engaging history of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) Los Angeles Angels.
Although the history of the team was from 1902 - 1957 this book only covers 1919 - 1957. No satisfying explanation is given for the missing years of 1902 - 1918 other than that the PCL was not "modern" at that time.
Those who have grown jaundiced and cynical by the continuing mediocre baseball played by the Major League Los Angeles, California, and Anaheim Angels are in for a shock. The PCL Los Angeles Angels were GREAT! Even the chauvinistic eastern press of the day called them the "Yankees of the West".
This is especially impressive given the fact that the Pacific Coast League was "minor league" in name only. Prior to the "jet age" having a coast-to-coast baseball league was simply not practical. The PCL WAS professional baseball on the west coast and the Los Angeles Angels were the best of the PCL best.
Beverage writes in a personable, concise fashion that will keep you turning page after page until you are done.
For those who love such things, the back of the book is filled with player statistics. There is even a "all time" Angels team picked by the author.
If you are an Angels fan, this is one book that you will want to track down, read, and treasure.
