4.0 out of 5 stars First attempt, this is first rate.
Glad I took the opportunity to read Ms. Boards first mystery novel. I've been a ardent fan of murder "Who Dun It's" for many years, and not inclined to read first attempts. 2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Mystery?
I was very excited to start this book, but quickly lost interest, as the plot was weak, the writing was poor, and the editing abysmal! The premise was strong, but got lost in the poor writing. Better luck next time.

Glad I took the opportunity to read Ms. Boards first mystery novel. I've been a ardent fan of murder "Who Dun It's" for many years, and not inclined to read first attempts. Her debute into the world of intrigue and suspense proved not only successful as a novel, but educational for the reader. She did a fine job keeping her readers jumping from one suspect to another, and her heroine manages to capture a genuine personality with both flaws and strengths. I look forward to Ms. Boards sequel to Angels of Anguish, and know we're in for many great pages of female sleuthing. My "Congratulation" on what I'm sure will me a great success for your first Mystery Novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars True to life, May 25, 2000
This review is from: Angels of Anguish (Paperback)
As a Probation Officer in Calif. I was thrilled to read an accurate account of what a probation officer does. I have never encountered the personal threats or violence, but I know its always a step away. This is a great read for anyone interested in gangs or the field of probation work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart-wrenching, FABULOUS story for a first time author, November 9, 1999

As the sister of a female police officer and the Mother of a 7-year old son, this story tugged at my heart as well as making me swell with pride and compassion for all police officers dealing with gang members. Sherrie Board couldn't have done a better job authoring this sad but true story of the struggle(s) our probation and police officers face on a day-to-day basis. I highly recommend this good book to anyone who likes a good mystery read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, July 25, 1999
This review is from: Angels of Anguish (Paperback)
This book is an easy read and a good mystery. You want to keep reading to find out what will happen next. The gang references in this book are accurate and you can learn about gang life and gang youth, in addition to being entertained by the story-line.

4.0 out of 5 stars No reader will be bored with Ms. Board's debut novel, January 23, 1999

This review is from: Angels of Anguish (Paperback)

No one believes as fervently than Orange County, California Probation Officer Katlin La Mar that `youth is wasted on the young". Unlike a decade ago, today's probation officers that work with the young carry weapons. The gang proliferation makes it unsafe to be without a gun. Even her godson Raphael became her legal ward due to drive-by murder of his mother and brother.

When someone kills her seven-year old charge, Katlin firmly believes one of her probationers committed the act and she intends to learn who did it and prove they performed the dastardly deed. To obtain information, Katlin performs questionable acts that lead to her suspension. When she is reinstated, she returns to her quest, utilizing the services of her lover, police lieutenant Blaine Stedman and his canine partner. However, the suspects seem so numerous that resolution seems impossible.

ANGELS OF ANGUISH is Sherri L. Board's debut novel and overall provides a strong message that gang violence like war serves only to provide business for the undertaker (just ask singer Edwin Starr). However, at times the story line is slowed down by a degree of preaching, which leaves to a choppy flow. Still no one will be bored with Ms. Board's novel that demonstrates her high degree of talent. Her insight into the gang culture is educational, and frighteningly realistic. Katlin is a compassionate character, who will gain much reader empathy following Raphael's murder. This novel is worth reading by those who want something a bit different.
