Book Description

June 1992
A call for help from an old friend sends Fitzroy Maclean Angel on the road with a heavy metal band and in pursuit of a truck full of contraband.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Amateur British sleuth Fitzroy (Fitz) Angel makes his American debut in this hip and likable yarn. A cabbie and part-time musician, Angel responds to a cry for help phoned in by his best friend, roadie Francis (Werewolf) Dromey, who has fallen afoul of a Breton "liberation group" by smashing up and losing possession of a truck in which they had hidden a shipment of drugs without the Werewolf's knowledge. Warned that the group will kill his friend if he doesn't find and return the drugs, Angel sets off, aided by his exotic former girlfriend, Lucinda (Lu Lu) Luger, who at 64 towers over the members of the heavy-metal band she manages, and by Werewolf's brother, Gearoid, a beekeeping monk. They find the drugs, which turn out to be Ecstasy tablets, but discover that the original Dutch dealer is also after the shipment. In another twist, the kidnappers tell Angel he will have to smuggle the drugs back to Britanny before they release Werewolf. Gearoid comes up with an ingenious hiding place that enables the team to transport the tablets across the Channel, but working out the trade proves far more dangerous, as neither the French nor the Dutch players plan to take any prisoners. A battle of wits and bullets provides a very lively resolution.

From Kirkus Reviews

The US debut of scruffy, scrappy Fitzroy Maclean Angel, whose chum Werewolf has been kidnapped and will be killed in five days by the FPB (Front Populaire Breton) unless Angel can recover the million-dollar cache of Ecstasy tablets that belonged to the FPB- -and that was hidden in the truck Werewolf crashed while driving as a roadie on a rock-star's tour. Angel has joins the heavy-metal band, reacquaints himself with the amazonian Lu-Lu, a sharpshooter swathed in leather, redeems the pills, and gets ready to renegotiate with the FPB for Werewolf's release. But they're not very amenable; other drug interests seem to be involved; and as Angel, Lu-Lu, et al. traipse around the European landscape, bodies go flying and cars go careening--until Werewolf, more or less intact, is released, and Angel and his dear old aunty come to terms with his killer cats. Fast-paced and often funny, with tart jibes at roadies, groupies, nonmusical musicians, and the pop life. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun British "mystery" - a good read, August 30, 2007
I am a big fan of Ripley's earlier Angel stories and this is delightful. Very wry and witty in the dry, English style. Lots of eccentric characters, including a cat to be admired.
