the slip defy contemporary category,
By Tony Iantosca (Richmond Virginia BOOO!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angels Come on Time (Audio CD)
the first thing i said upon listening to this album was "this band is great. you can't lump them into any one category." As indicated by many previous reviews, the jam band scene welcomes the slip as one of their own. i've got no objections to this aside from the fact that the slip transcends these categories, and everyone should recognize this. fron their opening track until the last note, they careen listlessly through each groovin, jazzy track. the guitarist enjoys relaxing and serene jazz riffs throughout the track "sorry." Other key tracks include, but are definatly not limited to, tinderbox, love and tears, six sided, and get me with fuji. the slip are an exquisitely uniqe, dynamic, and multi-faceted group with all the makings of an incredible band, both in the studio and live. listen to the sounds of phish, WP, and string cheese and then come on over to the slip. recognize the difference and, while i have nothing against jam bands and enjoy listening to them from time to time, do not do this incredible group the dishonor of simply lumping them in with the rest. and its not that the slip is way better (but they are;nudgenudge)than these three aforementioned jam bands, it is simply that their music transcends that limited category. also, the slip enjoys socially conscious lyrics from time to time on this album, further distinguishing them from jam bands' lack of meaningful lyrics, and causing me to be further infatuated with their music. peace!

bound to be overlooked by those not into jambands,

With Angels Come On Time, the major label debut for The Slip, the band manages to evolve their sound and make their most enjoyable and confident album yet, an album that with repeated listens reveals to be one of the best releases of the year. Those not in tune with the jamband scene may not have this one on their radar, but this is a band that is extremely talented with a wider musical palate tham any one genre, while still creating a distinctly original sound. Instrumental highlights for me include "Jumby" and "Sorry," while the vocal track "Sometimes True to Nothing" resonates with a brilliance the band had only hinted at previously in terms of dynamics and songwriting (it's the best song this year after Doves' There Goes The Fear). Angels flows beautifully, mo tracks need to be skipped - it's a great album, and a big thank you to the band for continuing to push the envelope forward.

A zesty blend of je ne se quoi and the new dawn,
By

Angels Come on Time, a great deal more eclectic than The Slip's independent debut album, From the Gecko (a hair-raising showcase of beautifully underproduced jazz groove at its finest), stands as a powerful testament to the untapped raw energy simmering and flowing miles apart from the mainstream.
The sparse yet poised lyrics relay a sense of delicate wonderment and an earthly sense of Human. The melancholic "Sometimes True to Nothing" rolls into an envigorating chorus and a wildly pleasant mild dissonance. The opening "Landing" and closing "Nellie Jean" are both golden nuggets that allow the listener to really hear the true intricacies of the Slip's tendency towards 'composition' rather than 'songwriting'. A great live act clearly capable of great studio albums.

Finally Getting it...,

First, I have to tell you I love the Slip... There is such an abundance of garbage out there on the radio and stuff that gets passed for music, it's like heaven when you really get to listen to real high caliber musicians who you know love what they do. If your not familiar with their music, it's tough to catogorize.. sort of a jazz-funk-triphop jam band (this obviously leaves alot of room, but I believe they are just into music, not labels). I have seen them live many times and have never been dissappointed. My jaw drops in disbelief at times when I hear them play.. a huge amount of talent. But.. I have been dissappointed by previous comercial CDs that they have made. This is the first one that really begins to show what these guys are about. I know from what I have heard in the past that these guys are still more talented than the CD lets on, but at least this is a much closer representation of it than past efforts. In short, it's worth the purchase. I would liken it to someone who is really beautiful but not photogenic, when you see the pics you know they missed the true beauty of the person. I think the Slip have the same problem, but this time they got a better photographer.. It's still really not showing what these guys are all about, but own it's own merits, it's worth the purchase. If you can ever see the Slip live, do it.

Pure and Simple,

Although the Slip are really a live band, this studio excursion is still fantastic. Highlight tracks include Get me with Fuji, Sometimes True to Nothing, Tinderbox and Love and Tears. The whole album is very cohesive while still being representative of The Slip's eclectic nature. As soon as people start embracing music that is truly creative, passionate, dynamic and energetic, The Slip will go multi-platinum. All we can do until then is buy their CDs. I highly recommend "From the Gecko" in addition to this CD. It's still another aspect of The Slip, from another time period, but it's equally fantastic.

An Incredible Album.,

The first time I saw The Slip live, I knew that the way I thought about music and the way that I thought about the term "band" had changed forever. The Slip is incredible, and this album captures all that can be caught in a studio recording. I highly recommend this album, in addition to "Does" and "Live Is My Jumby". All of the members of the slip (a trio of guitar, bass and percussion) are extremley talented and all have a moment to shine on this album. "Sometimes True To Nothing" is perhaps the most thrilling, while other tracks will amaze you with thier complex and yet sensible writing. Fans of "Bela Fleck" will enjoy "Nellie Jean Jam", while compositions like "Get me with fuji" and "Beetle to the badlands" are all around fun. Don't be so quick to classify these guys with Phish or SCI, or put them under the JamBand genre. They are doing alot to change the term "jamband", mostly in the way they have a more definitive sound, with roots in the fusion jazz style of the earliest Pat Metheny recordings with Jaco Pastorious and Bob Moses. Brad's guitar playing will appeal to anyone fond of jazz guitar greats like Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny. Brad also displays other influences such as Django Reinhartd on the track "Jumby", as well as his ability to rock-out on "Sometimes true to Nothing", not to mention display CCR style folk-rock on "Love and Tears". Andrew's Drumming is out of this world, always exciting, fast and strong, yet at the same time in control and disciplined. Marc's bass playing is highly influnced by the late Jaco Pastorious. The free, distored, funky and tight basslines are bound to impress, and the occasional fast, loose, and funky fill will amaze you. Although this album is definatly going to have a lasting effect on how you view the modern music scene, seeing The Slip live is an exprience like no other. Consider buying "Does" along with this album, to get a feel for The Slip's jazz background and talented song writing.

Musical shamans, their songs detoxify the soul. This album is an excellent studio effort from a band that moves me like no other. Seek out their wholesome live vibrations.

I heard their song "Take a Beetle to the Badlands" on one of those streaming music sites, and I tried to get the song from Napster. Napster didn't have it, so I called around for a used copy here in town - no dice. I finally gave in and bought it here, and I was really disappointed with the album. The only decent song there was "Beetle," the rest of it was just a waste of money.
