Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Carie, author of five romances for the Christian market, now offers fans a contrived story set in the early 1800s, the time period noted for exploration of the American West by Lewis and Clark. Carie's female protagonist, Emma Daring, daughter of a well-to-do St. Louis couple, believes she is about to enter into a real-life fairy tale by marrying the most handsome man. Eric Montclaire, though devilishly beguiling in outward appearance, swiftly reveals his dark inner side as Emma's new husband. Terrified and emotionally defeated, Emma secretly looks forward to Eric's upcoming travel expedition when she will find freedom from him. Too bad for Emma that Eric decides to take her along. En route, Emma discovers hidden strength and finds support from cartographer Luke Bowen, who sees through Eric's guise and vows to protect Emma no matter the personal cost. Though Carie's previous fiction titles have won accolades, this one fails to deliver the goods in either character or story. (Feb.)

More About the Author

Revealing secrets of the Kingdom, one story at a time . . .

Born and raised in Vincennes, Indiana, Jamie is a preacher's daughter. Road trips with her dad--to and from Bible studies across Indiana--were filled with talks of things beyond earth's bounds - creation and the fall, God and Jesus and the rapture, the earthly walk compared to the spiritual walk, and how we are born for more than what we can see or touch.
The highlight of those nights was stopping at a truck stop in the middle of the night where her dad would spend a little of the offering basket on two slices of pie and a couple of Cokes. Nothing ever felt so special as a middle of the night slice of pie with her dad. And nothing could stop the writing pouring out of her.

Poems, short stories, skits and song lyrics later, Jamie grew up and married. When her eldest son turned five she decided to try her hand at novels. Snow Angel was released by B&H Publishing Group in September 2007 and won the USA Book News "Best Books 2007" Awards winner, and 2008 RITA Awards® Best First Book finalist. It was the beginning of her dream career. Jamie has since written several books to great acclaim. Her first novella, a Christmas novella, The Snowflake, is scheduled to release October 2010.

Jamie and Tony have been married for twenty-two years and live in Indianapolis, Indiana with their three sons and a giant of a dog named Leo.

If she could only say one thing to her readers it would be, "Live the dreams God has destined you for!"

"Powder covers a multitude of sins." (p.50)

The sins that Emma Daring powdered over were those perpetrated upon her by an angel - an angel straight from the pits of hell. Jamie Carie's upcoming novel, Angel's Den, is a journey into the darkness of human depravity. Jamie takes the reader into the nightmare of an abusive relationship, into the quiet place that an abused person escapes to from their horror, into a hopelessness and terror-filled life that will steal your breath away.

Yet...there is still redemption to be found. Using God's traits of mercy and long-suffering, Jamie introduces the character of Luke, and latter Judge Littleton. Through their faith and their unwavering trust in God, Jamie reminds the reader that even in life's most horrific, dark moments, God has not left us alone. Emma lives for a time in this story as little more than a prisoner, although she is surrounded by people. As she is moved out West under the most unusual of circumstances, God begins to quietly work in her heart and life to prepare her for the trial of her faith that lies ahead. Emma becomes a heroic figure in many ways simply because she endures even when it seems that death itself would be a preferred option.

Angel's Den has to be Jamie Carie's most riveting work to date. She shares the gospel by exploring the broken lives of her main characters and then through the grace offered by those who are obedient to reach out to them despite the risk it might involve. There are unexpected twists and turns throughout the story that will keep you reading at a frantic pace, and there comes a point when the reader feels rather desperate for some relief from the tension-filled plot.

I am a huge fan of Jamie Carie's books and I love to recommend her stories to those who enjoy Christian romances but are tired of the same old plot. Jamie's books are akin to those of Julie Lessman and Deeanne Gist, authors who aren't ashamed to let their character experience the passion of love and aren't restricted to chaste kisses that are immediately regretted.

This book wonderfully portrays the edgy romance that Jamie is known for. If you are expecting a safe romance, you need to find another book. The characters in this book experience the ups and downs of love, the harsh cruelties of love lost and the yearning of longing for love. Emma and Luke are very likable characters while Eric is the true villain of the story. Don't worry about feeling frustrated with how situations are handled because justice is served by the end. The historical part of the story is not really a big factor as is the basis of the setting. This might disappoint readers looking for a more historical read but it is not a problem for the book. The romance is the main part of the story and is done extremely well. There's a lot of drama in the book and you really get swept up into the story.

There are scenes dealing with characters growing in faith and their walk with God but I felt that they were crucial to the story and not added preachiness. Overall I really enjoyed this book. This is the type of historical romance that's heavy on the romance that I enjoy. The story is not fake, the characters are real, and the passion is very much there. Again, if you are looking for Christian romance that really speaks to you, pick up this book as well as Jamie's other books. You won't be disappointed.

The year was 1808.

Emma Daring was getting ready to walk down the aisle and marry, dashing Eric Montclaire. Emma realized that Eric didn't really love her; he just loved the image of having a wife in order to trick people that he was a respectable man.

Luke Bowen receives a letter from Eric offering him a job, accompanying Eric and Emma on a trek as they plan to follow in Lewis and Clark's foot steps. Due to Luke's great talent as a cartographer, he would make a nice addition. Luke can't pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity, despite his father's disapproval. When Luke discovers what type of man, Eric really is, can he save Emma before it is too late?

Angel's Den is the second book, I have read by Jamie Carie. Just like the last book, I enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting. Mrs. Carie evenly balances the gospel of the Bible in her stories. I instantly felt a dislike for Eric. He is a monster. I felt sorry for Emma. It was nice to see that she grew stronger and keep her faith through the whole ordeal. Luke Bowen was Emma's guardian angel. This book had both good characters and an even better story line. I want more Jamie Carie.

Angel’s Den was such an interesting book. It is full of historic sites and details from along the trail that Lewis and Clark once traveled, as well as a storyline that kept me glued to the book till the very end. There is just so much wrapped up in this story!

At it’s most basic, this is a tale of warning. Emma enters into marriage with Eric Montclaire without realizing the kind of man he truly is. It is a tale of his abuse toward her and the way in which he attempts to control everything she says and does. But another important reminder from Angel’s Den concerns the importance of relationships. Eric grew into the cruel and manipulative man that he was because of his father’s cruel abuse of his own family. In the same way, Luke Bowen, another major character in the book, is a strong and godly man because of the spiritual influence that his parents provided for him. Luke attempts to help Emma learn more about God’s love for her, in order to give her hope for the future. And he finds a mentor in Judge Littleton. This man is able to help Luke look deeper into his feelings for Emma. She needs Luke and his help, but he must not forget that she is married to another, even if that man is a monster to her.

Something that I really enjoyed was the adventure in this story. It was a very exciting read. Eric Montclaire truly believes he is above all others and can get away with anything. And he seems to! Time and time again, he triumphs. When things seem to have gotten as low as they possibly could, I just had to keep reading to find out if his evil plans would truly flourish. There were some surprises along the way that I didn’t see coming and that was fun as well. All in all, an enjoyable story.

I would like to express my thanks to B&H Publishing for the complimentary copy of this book that I received in exchange for an honest review.
