I love The Bug. This is a little different from their other albums, but I enjoyed it just the same. It's a little more mellow with that same beat pounding in the background. I would say it's a cerebral version of past albums. If you liked the band's prior music, you won't be disappointed. If you have never listened before, try it. London Zoo is still my favorite of theirs, but this one is a close second.

The Bug is back! Ninja Tune has made this maybe his most readily available album in the States to date. If this album is any indicator, he will be gaining several bus loads of new listeners.

Long time listeners will notice a shift in The Bug's musical style. The shift is exemplified in this album's title, "Angels & Devils." Contrary to his typical aggressive style, The Bug starts this album more contemplatively, with a focus on atmospherics. The collaboration with Grouper is a highlight of this lighter, maybe headier style. These are surely the "angelic" songs.

However, by the end of "Angels & Devils," The Bug has unleashed the full demonic repertory of his "devils." The songs get dirtier and hit harder with each successive track.

As always, the meticulous detail of his beats and synthesizer programming make The Bug one of the most interesting artists in his genre... and in electronic music in general. This is Dancehall in only the vaguest way.

Of particular note is the programming and production on "Dirty" -- simply astounding.

By the way, if you ever get the chance, go see The Bug live. It is madhouse fun. Also, be sure to check out his earlier releases, 12"s, and EPs. There is not a bad one in the bunch.

starts off sweetly, but quickly shows it's edge and depth...the bass is heavy and the music will keep you playing this one on repeat. The previous London Zoo was a masterpiece and this is a tremendous continuation and evolution of that sound.
Best release of 2014.
