5.0 out of 5 stars Stories From A Real Emergency Department
Angels in the ER is not really about angels--at least not the supernatural kind. It's not really about miracles--the supernatural kind. It's about everyday angels who work in the emergency department of a busy hospital, or bring patients in ambulances, or minister to the patients in other ways. 2.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, but lacking the miraculous
The stories in the book are very interesting and easy to read. It's hard to put the book down. However, I found that it was lacking in what the title of the book advertises. For example, in the chapter titled "It Must have been a miracle", he says "A miracle. I have never personally witnessed anything I would call a miracle of healing, nor have any of my...

This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
Angels in the ER is not really about angels--at least not the supernatural kind. It's not really about miracles--the supernatural kind. It's about everyday angels who work in the emergency department of a busy hospital, or bring patients in ambulances, or minister to the patients in other ways. Sometimes, the patients themselves are the angels, the ones who teach a certain ER physician remarkable lessons.

This book is a remarkable collection of stories from the real emergency department, not the ones on television. Stories of bravery, compassion, struggle, and often failure. Robert Lesslie actually works there and in this wonderful book he relates many of his experiences, both good and bad, and painful lessons he's learned.

Author Lesslie is a gifted and polished writer. His stories move along smoothly, always entertaining and engaging. This is a book you can't put down, except that you have to let the stories sink in before you move on. Dr. Lesslie is not afraid to reveal his own shortcomings and the lessons he's learned from his mistakes. This is a Christian themed book, and each chapter is headed by a quote from Scripture, but only on rare occasions does it get preachy. I enjoyed Angels in the ER and recommend it highly. 5.0 out of 5 stars From the heart, January 2, 2009
This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
I'm a physician assistant who knew and worked with Dr. Bob Lesslie years ago when he was an emergency medicine resident at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. Although I had lost touch with him, my sister bought me his book for Christmas and he made me feel good all over again. Bob enjoys the work he does and the people he works with. I still remember his sense of humor back in those days. One night it was quite hectic in the ER and Dr. Lesslie got on the ER intercom to announce, "Will the patient who rode the Brahma bull to the ER please remove it from the parking lot immediately." As patients and visitors swarmed from their seats in the waiting room to "see" the Brahma bull, Bob chuckled and picked up another chart to see another patient. He was funny and cool back then and apparently never lost those traits. We all used to talk about writing a book of ER experiences. Dr. Lesslie did it right. I read his book in 2 evenings and thoroughly enjoyed the stories. He's one of a kind and so is his book. God bless all the "angels" who continue to work in the ER.

I found this book by accident, while searching for something else. Because I was intrigued by the title and the fact that it's written by a doctor, I decided to download it to my Kindle. I just finished a couple evenings of delightful reading, and highly recommend the book.
Each chapter is prefaced by an easily digestible passage from scripture, which forms the theme for the real-life stories that follow. This author doesn't inundate the reader with technical language, and writes with great compassion about all types of patients. Despite his obviously kind heart and keen skills, we see that he is definitely no pushover when it comes to dealing with 'patients' who attempt to abuse the ER system (something that had never occurred to me prior to this reading).
This book made me think about the children who suffer (and die) at the hands of irresponsible parenting, the lonely and ostracized folks who don't seem to have anywhere else to go, and the greatness of the people who dedicate their lives to the healing arts (psychological, physical, and spiritual). The book ends with one of the most moving accounts I've ever seen, about another doctor, who unfailingly and selflessly administers to a large/adoring clientele.
Overall, it's the kind of content that makes me want to be a better person myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, July 2, 2009
This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
Well, reading the reviews and back of the book I expected it to be like patients talking about bright lights, as angels, etc.-- bacically, I expected a book about angels.
But really, it's just a book about some interesting stuff that happened in the ER. One chapter was about a possessed lady, really interesting, I liked it.
I haven't read the last chapter yet, but that seems like it's gonna be the chapter w/the angel, but, that's what I've been anticipating so I probably shouldn't get my hope up, haha.

But, I rated it four star b/c even though it wasn't what I expected, I did enjoy it and it is inspiring(:

Dr. Lesslie writes in a casual, conversational, friendly tone. He allows us to see behind the scenes in the ER. You will laugh, weep, giggle, grin, and cry. And with him, you will celebrate the angels in our lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars M Vogel, September 11, 2008
This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
I have the privilege of knowing Robert Lessie personally. He is an active member of my church and Sunday School class. I have also been to him as a patient and I can tell you his book reflects the true character of his being.
When I heard that he wrote a book that was being published I was so excited! How many people do you know that have been published? He is certainly the first for me.
After reading the excerpt I ordered 7 books to give as gifts. I began reading mine the day it arrived and couldn't put it down. I was captivated by his writing style. It was like he was sitting with me telling me these experiences that he had in the Emergency Room. The book is comprised of many incidents that easily flow together making it hard to put down. I found myself going through a range of emotions..laughing one minute and crying the next. As I approached the end of the book, I found myself slowing down...I didn't want it to end.
I hear through the grapevine that Robert is working on another book and I can hardly wait to read it!
I promise you will not be bored reading "Angels in the ER"!

5.0 out of 5 stars ANGELS INDEED, December 31, 2008
This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
This book will make you a believer in angels. I already am. I experienced them many times in the CCU before I received my 1991 heart transplant.

"Angels in the ER." Is inspiring reading for all readers whether they are healthcare professionals, bricklayers, or office workers. It is truly a gem.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, but lacking the miraculous, January 2, 2009
This review is from: Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor (Paperback)
The stories in the book are very interesting and easy to read. It's hard to put the book down. However, I found that it was lacking in what the title of the book advertises. For example, in the chapter titled "It Must have been a miracle", he says "A miracle. I have never personally witnessed anything I would call a miracle of healing, nor have any of my colleagues..." He then goes on to tell the story of a teenage girl who came in and discovered she was pregnant. Her mother was of course upset, but in the end they were hugging because she discovered her daughter had been molested by her uncle. The only miracle in that story was that it was Christmas Eve and the girl had claimed to be a virgin and the author was comparing the situation to Jesus' virgin birth. So, if you are looking for true miracles, or real stories of angels, I would suggest a subscription to Guideposts.
