Holt's Finest!,
By deepbluereview "deepbluereview" (SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA USA) - See all my reviews

This is by far Holt's finest effort to date. 8 new originals and 4 really good covers of some lesser known material by the likes of JJ Cale and Bob Dylan. The cover of Lowell George's Spanish Moon is truly fantastic. The guitar playing on all tracks is excellent and the vocals strong. The tempo on the CD is mostly upbeat although it does have its quiet moments on a couple of the tracks.A real surprise recording and one not to be missed.

Scott Holt's Transition,
By Carl Counce (Tennessee) - See all my reviews

Scott Holt's new release "Angels in Exile" fully shows his growth from a side man for Buddy Guy to a well polished recording star. This CD displays Scott's tremendus skills from song writer to preformer. Scott Holt is no copy cat he puts his own style into each track along with his heart and soul.

Buy this CD!!! you'll be glad you did, I PROMISE.Let's Go: kicks the album off with it's hypnotic groove. Too Far Gone: a low down, cold shot like, blues number that will leave you beggin 4 more. Angels In Exile: THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE ALBUM, EXPECT TO HEAR IT ON THE RADIO! Dress You Up: an almost pop-like, nirvana soundin song, awesome guitar solo!. The Unforgiven: a drivin blues-rock song with amazing guitar work. I'll Make Love To You Anytime: bluesy rock song that gets its message across. Up In Flames: great song and great story Spanish Moon: funky guitar, great vocals, great drums! I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living: gutsy blues with great keyboard playin Blind Willie McTell: great guitar and a great story. Who You're Thinking Of: great love song, even better live! Strong Enough For Goodbye: slow song with magical guitar work Scott and the band went all out on this album! Buy it as soon as possible, you won't want to be the only person without it cause it's goin to the top! And be sure to see Scott and The Scott Holt Band live!!

More production, less bluesy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Angels in Exile (Audio CD)
Personally I prefer The Dark of the Night to this latest effort. Night had a slightly grittier tone to it, perhaps more Buddy Guy influenced. Angels in Exile is a bit softer and less memorable to my ears. Scott Holt is a great guitarist and I look forward to his next CD.

Sensory Sublimation through a convergence of blues and rock,
By Melissa (Wilsonville, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angels in Exile (Audio CD)
The first time I listened to it, I was floored, just totally in awe. The second time I listened to it, I tried to really hear it. The third time I listened to it, I tried to feel it. But nothing could have prepared me for the fourth time. The fourth time I listened to it, I just pulled my knees up to my chest, wrapped my arms around my legs, closed my eyes and experienced the music. So there I was...112 degrees with the hot Louisiana sun beating down on me,literally a couple of feet from a swamp, sitting on the hood of an already overheated black car in shorts. My hair was clinging to my shirt from all the sweat that was running down my back and my thighs were achieving third degree burn status but I was totally incapable of motion. I couldn't move until the album was over. That much passion and fire should never be secondary to anything. While experiencing it, everything else was completely inconsequential to me. It washed over me like scalding rain, penetrating and puncturing my fraile defenses. Through total sensory sublimation comes divinity and today I could only think of one word to describe this music, divine.

Misclassified,
By
This review is from: Angels in Exile (Audio CD)
There is no doubt that Mr. Holt is a fine guitarist, but i would not classify this cd as a blues cd. There are a couple of tracks that are bluesy (#2 for example), but if one is looking for some some deep blues guitar playing, this is not the cd to get. I bought this cd on spec; and ended up with a major dissapointment. The CD has rocker tunes (wailing guitar mixed in with a flurry of rhythm guitar wash) but has little of the bluesy feel (check out Rick Holmstrom's Hydraulic Groove for a contrast). Best track is a cover of Spanish Moon.

Scott Holt is a hard working guitar player. If you haaven't seen him in concert you REALLY owe it to yourself to do it. You'll not find anyone that puts any more energy into a concert than Scott Holt.
Angel's in Exile is a great CD. Not every single song is top 10 material but I listen from start to finish without skipping any so there are not that I hate. Ever since hearing Scott Holt in concert I've been adding all his CD's to my collection. I love them all. I'm a big Blues fan and love Blues Rock. Scott Holt fills the bill. Buy this CD. You won't be disappointed! "EZ" Ringgold, GA.

Angels in exile, my review from Barcelona,
This review is from: Angels in Exile (Audio CD)
Angels in Exile' is an album by former Buddy Guy Band guitarist, Scott Holt. Besides George's "Spanish Moon", no doubt the best track, and perhaps some other song like the opening track "Baby Let's Go", the boogies "Too Far Gone", "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" and "Up In Flames", a little mysterious but interesting, the remainder of the record practically has no interest at all. It is very limp and has a bungled sound. Furthermore, it isn't a truly Blues record. For me it ended up being a major disappointment, specially the two last themes. I expected much more from Holt, no doubt a very good guitarist. I give it 2,5 stars.
