Book Description

May 2003
Personal true stories written by men & women who have lost an animal companion. How the companion came into their life, touched their heart, enriched their life, and then departed. Each story is accompanied by a beautiful drawing (50 drawings). Includes heroic dogs dying in war and in police work, and a chapter by Veterinarians on pain control, hospice programs and theories, and euthanasia – when, how, where, when not to – and more.

Each warm and inspiring story provides comfort to those grieving over the loss of a beloved animal companion. To reassure them that others grieve deeply also and that grieving is a natural process following the loss of an animal companion.

Veterinarians share stories, thoughts, and medical guidelines so everyday people can see how they feel about and treat terminally ill animals, control pain, and perform euthanasia. Allowing an animal companion to die gracefully can offer comfort to the owner. Hotline support numbers provided.

Hospice care for pets, a new program, is outlined in detail and is a bridge to a more gentle and dignified death at home in the care of loved ones.

Encourages recognition of service animals such as Police Dogs and the War Dogs of Vietnam.

Veterinary Clinics are making this book available as solace to those whose ill or injured pets must be euthanized. The book’s tender and caring story of animals and their special closeness to a family touches the heart and offers comfort to grieving families.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helps with the grieving of a pet loss, July 20, 2009

This review is from: On Angels Wings: Personal Stories About the Passing Away of Beloved Animal Companions (Paperback)
NOTE: I received this book for free from the author as one of the stories in the book was written by me. The author is a veterinarian, and even though he's on the other side of the country, if I lived near the area where he practices, I would take my pets to him.

The book is a compilation of short stories written about every kind of pet imaginable, but most of them dogs and cats, of the love we all share for our pets and the loss we feel when they pass on to the Rainbow Bridge.

If you have recently had a pet die, or have a terminally ill pet, this book will help you in your grief.
