Book Description

April 22, 2003
Do you choke back frustrations with a romantic partner because you’re afraid of breaking up? Do you feel trapped by negative family dynamics but guilty if you get angry at your loved ones? Are you afraid of showing your anger in professional settings for fear that you won’t be taken seriously?

Conventional wisdom tells us that anger is a dangerous emotion—and that we should do whatever we can to temper it and keep it under wraps. For women, anger is especially frowned upon: we view it as unflattering, bitchy, and a sure-fire way to sabotage our careers and relationships. But in fact, angry emotions are one of the greatest gifts we possess. As authors Deborah Cox, Sally Stabb, and Karin Bruckner show in this landmark book, when expressed openly and directly, anger can be a remarkable, positive tool for transforming women’s lives.

Based on the authors’ nationally acclaimed six-year study on the links between gender and anger, The Anger Advantage offers women everywhere an entirely new paradigm for thinking about anger, and shows why diverting it is rarely the best idea. Their findings showed that women who are uncomfortable with how they are being treated at home or work, who try to hide their anger or struggle to voice tensions not only risk a host of physical ailments—such as headaches and depression—but become hostages in stagnant, unfulfilling relationships and lose touch with their own motivations and needs. In contrast, women who embrace their angry emotions and learn to express them in open, productive ways experience heightened intellectual clarity, greater self-esteem, and the passion and energy to spark life-altering change.

The Anger Advantage guides you in evaluating your own anger patterns, and then offers hands-on, prescriptive strategies for using anger proactively in all areas of your life: at home, at work, in friendships, and in love. As you learn to identify the roots of angry emotions and share your anger in a forthright, positive way, you will:
• gain clearer insight into who you are and what you want
• learn how to set and maintain healthy boundaries, and forge stronger personal relationships
• alleviate any physical symptoms generated by unhealthy diversions of anger
• free yourself from unnecessary guilt, shame, and self-recrimination

Warm, insightful, and empowering, The Anger Advantage provides a groundbreaking window into women’s anger that reveals why we shouldn’t be afraid to express ourselves—and why angry emotions can be a guiding light in building rewarding, fulfilling lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this summary of seven years of qualitative research, the authors (Women's Anger: Clinical and Developmental Perspectives) explore anger's various forms of expression and suppression and its impact on women's lives, relationships and well being. "Unspoken gender rules play into the diversion of women's anger," they argue, but when anger is acknowledged and "attended to," it can be a definite asset. In a chapter on anger among friends, they describe how a fight between two girls led to a dispute between their mothers; dispelling the "anger myth" that friendships don't involve differences of "opinions, needs, and desires," the authors cogently analyze the situation and offer a self-test to help readers plan healthy responses to conflict. Anecdotes from real women and citations from expert research illustrate the ways in which dismissing anger can create problems, while allowing anger to surface in constructive ways can life-changing. Other chapters address anger's place in relations with family, spouses or significant others and work colleagues. The authors stress that "making big changes take time. Give yourself plenty of space, time, and self-care as you begin to work with the tools." Some of their assessments feel too broad ("couples in conflict feel annoyed, and that's normal as they constantly negotiate and renegotiate their togetherness and separateness") to be advantageous, and some of their anger-expressing scenarios feel inauthentic, but their insights into anger and the ways women can use it is intriguing and skillfully presented.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ok, I read most of it but cant afford to buy it... yet...., June 8, 2003
This review is from: The Anger Advantage: The Surprising Benefits of Anger and How it Can Change a Woman's Life (Hardcover)
I enjoy skimming the psychology section of the store and this book was just glaring at me (probably because of its broad white face and yellow explanation point)... I read the title, and I had previously looked up other books for women and their anger (theres not a lot of them) and nothing looked really organised or updated.

I sat down and started reading...

All I can say is WOW! When I think of people with anger problems I always envision the male beating his wife, losing his temper and becoming irate. "Those" were anger problems... But as females we handle our anger SO incredibly diffrent. Although some of us can be violent like males... Generally, most of us are not, but handle our anger just as destructively.

The book covers an array of myths women believe and how each myth is applied to specific sitations when females become angry. Theres also personal studies and commentary from women having problems with their families, spouse, boyfriend, kids, work, etc.

An example of an anger myth...

*Women are to remain docile or uppity and not share their anger. Because if they do theres something obviously wrong with them. You are either sick or crazy or definately unfeminine.

This myth invalidates our feeling of anger and makes us doubt our own intuition/feelings.

Another fairly interesting myth was the one I took to heart...

*All or most anger leads to violence.

This again isnt true but always made me so anxious when I fought/argued with someone close to me. So eventually I would supress how I felt with this perticular person although they had never hit me.

This book is very organised and heart felt. Although it is not condeming it helps you take a closer look at your own responsibilities and how you handle an array of issues when you become angry or upset. It comfronts the consequences and unrealistic expectations we have been tought as children or by society to uphold.

In conclusion, this is a book worth buying! It offers many answers and solutions. Men could also learn A LOT from this book even though it is applied to women specificly.

Another book I suggest is "Beyond Anger: A guide for Men" by Harbin. Although tailored for men, women can learn from this to!

If your thirst for better understanding and communication in relationships still isnt quenched try...

"Getting the Love You Want: A guide for couples" (Hendrix)

and...

"Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion" (Rosenberg)
