The Anger and Aggression Workbook by Liptak, Leutenberg and Sippola,
By Carol A. Butler "Psychiatric Registered Nurse" (Yucaipa, California) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Anger & Aggression Workbook (Spiral-bound)
The Anger and Aggession Workbook, by John J. Liptak, Ester A.Leutenberg, and edited by Carlene Sippola, is an excellent resource for teachers, mental health professionals and others working with clients experiencing anger problems. The self-assessments, exercises and informational hand-outs helped my patients develop insight into their issues, and coping skills to handle anger appropriately. The book was used with adults, ages eighteen to over sixty-five, who had psychiatric and/or chemical dependency diagnoses. It would be equally effective with younger people in school or rehabilitation settings. High interest in the activities was sustained. Participants found the hand-outs easy to understand and relevant to their needs. This excellent resource is highly recommended for professionals in Human Services settings.

This book is a great tool for working with adolescents experiencing inappropraite responses to their anger. I highly recommend it for use for anger management. The clients we have used it with have responded positively to how the material is presented.

I lead anger management groups in a psychosocial rehab program, working mostly with adults who have severe and persistent mental illness. This workbook is simplistic enough for them to really grasp the concepts. Higher functioning adults might find it too simplistic, although the self-assessments are excellent and would probably be useful with any adult population. Many other anger management workbooks are very wordy, with pages and pages of stories and examples and lengthy explanations of concepts -- my clients lose interest in those types of workbooks FAST. I find that workbooks like "The Anger & Aggression Workbook" are much more effective with the particular population I serve. It provides easily reproduced assessments related to key areas of anger management, followed by simple related activities that encourage self-exploration and challenge the user to reframe their unhealthy patterns. I am able to teach and explain the concepts to the group myself, and use the activities in this workbook to supplement and as the starting point for group discussions. I wish this workbook provided more activities on assertiveness training, since that seems to be a key need for my population...Still searching for a good resource for that! But all in all, a good resource for helping clients get hands-on to build insight in an anger management class or group.

Better suited for children and adolescents,

This review is from: The Anger & Aggression Workbook (Spiral-bound)
I purchased this book based upon several glowing reviews, but was disappointed after scanning through it. The material is simplistic for adults, urging the reader to take "full responsibility for all that happens to you from this point forward," or suggesting "You need to release all of the negative thoughts and feelings . . . that are harming you now. Having released the old feelings allows you to receive new, positive emotions." The authors do not provide much in the way of practical examples for how the reader is to go about following these suggestions. I would consider using this book with children or adolescents, but not with adults. The authors' somewhat scolding tone would not be received well by most of my adult clients. Also, at the risk of sounding picky, this text does not appear to have been carefully proofed before going to press; I came across several noticeable typos while paging through randomly. Unfortunately, I paid the extra money to have this book sent to me in two days. Live and learn . . .

The workbook has very useful information to use with teens that are having trouble with anger. It is easy to use and easy for teens to identify with the information. Parents also have a better understanding of how to help their children.

I'm a middle school guidance counselor and I've used this book a lot. Giving students the assignments in it helps them think through why they get angry so quickly. Working through the book has really made a difference for some of them. Doesn't work for everyone, but at least parts will cause some self-awareness.
