5.0 out of 5 stars A classic jazz album
Angela Bofill's voice is a true wonder. Exotic and exhilirating, sweet and soothing, picturesque and inviting. She conjures vivid imagery with her interpretations. 1.0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate hackjob by Arista Contemporary....
This my friends to begin is a wonderful album. I love Angela Bofill with all my heart, she is my favorite vocalist. That being said the imprint "Arista Contemporary" completly botched the remastering of this album!! There are scratches heard on many of the songs that make it same like it was ripped from a damaged vinly record. This ruined my listening experience, as the...

Angela Bofill's voice is a true wonder. Exotic and exhilirating, sweet and soothing, picturesque and inviting. She conjures vivid imagery with her interpretations. I discovered "Angie" about five years ago not too long after I started college. I picked up a vinyl copy, and I have been in love with Angela ever since. This beautifully packaged reissue truly does the album justice. "Under the Moon and Over the Sky" is a jazz/fusion delight; it's Afro-Cuban rhythms are intoxicating. The highs and lows Bofill hits will give you chills. It is that kind of drama that makes this record a compelling listen. Her definitive take on "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" is a joyous, moving masterpiece. He pleas of "have faith in me" are almost palpable. But in my opinion, the best track is "The Only Thing I Would Wish For." The jazzy vocal arrangement and flute work by Dave Valentin paint a real picture of what GRP was all about in its infancy. The liner notes and packaging are also great. So this CD is well worth the price... it is a moving experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voice of an Angel Unleashed - finally!, December 3, 2001

I am so delighted this album was re-released on CD! Like many a Bofill fan, I've been waiting and hoping until now. I got turned-on to Angela Bofill when this album was released back in the late 70's and have been a devotee of hers ever since.

Angie's buttery vocals are so unique and pleasing to the ear. She's been compared to numerous other vocalists (Toni Braxton, Regina Belle, Gwen Guthrie) among others, however nobody's ever really matched her voice's velvety grace, in my opinion. When Angela sings, you can feel her heart. Her vocal nectar comes from a place deep inside her soul - a musical power that few artists of this genre and era have duplicated. Unfortunately, her vocal prowess is deeply underappreciated and overlooked by many.

Her career has seen ups and downs, but the voice and soul remains. This debut LP benefited greatly from the highly-polished production styleings of Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. They also produced her next effort, "Angel of the Night", which I highly recommned as well (5-stars). I only wish she would have stuck with GRP, as I felt the production values of her later LPs diminished somewhat in the 80's. Nevertheless, Once you've heard Ms. Bofill's rendition of "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" and "Summer Nights", you'll be hooked... trust me on this one. Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS CD!

Thank God for Angela Bofill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Debut, June 25, 2005

I first heard this album in high school 1978 and I was blown away. I was stunned in my tracks. I never heard a voice so angelic. The closest so far has been Chante Moore. Incredible unique voice and timbre. A lot of soul and emotion in her music. She also writes half of the songs on the album. Angela is one of greatest vocalists ever. A rare talent. I have the vinyl and CD version of this album, its too bad that the CD process takes some of the naturalness out of vocals, the vinyl sounds much better

5.0 out of 5 stars Her Debut and it was Stellar!, February 27, 2005

Excellent stuff!

Track 1: Under the Moon and Over the Stars" is a classic, mellow, slow-moving, tasty treat! I love the flavor of this song..!

Track 2: I challenge anyone not to feel the groove in "Baby, I need Your Love." It calls you. Before you know, you're singing and humming along with her...and its taking you back to a time that you tucked away or hadn't visited in awhile.

Track 3: "This Time I'll be Sweeter" Her poignant and heartfelt plea for a second chance. It exudes pain while asking for mercy and forgiveness!

Track 4: "Rough Times": My least favorite track on the CD. A mid-tempo groove. Enjoyable, though.

Track 5: "The Only Thing I Would Wish For": Oh man! This is my favorite song on the whole CD! She scats, she blows, she hums, she digs deep and the tune just sways you! It's funky, groovy and mired in mellow at the same time...and the flute solo! Superb!

Track 6: "Summer Days": This brings back memories of my youth, my first love and the last days of summer before going off to school! She sings so sweetly, so softly yet so melodic, about how what happened yesterday (love) is gone with the wind..and sings about summer days and moon lit nights..and how quickly it fades away! It's impossible not to get caught up in her octave wave and drift away!

Track 7: Share Your World: Quasi-mellow tune with a nice groove that you can listen to and just relax. It carries the CD further down Angie's road.

Track 8: Children of the World Unite: Angie's plea for the children of the world. I use to think the song was out of place back then, but I actually enjoy it now.

This is a solid CD! Anyone wanting to introduce themselves to the voice of an Angel, start here. You will not be sorry. All those that grew up with Angie, you already know what you're missing. Treat yourself! Revisit the glory days!

Angela Bofill's debut album. This is still as wonderful, amazing and unforgettable as it was when originally released in 1978.A truly wonderful and timeless album which features "Under The Moon And Over The Sky" "This Time I'll Be Sweeter " and "Summer Days". If you are into good music you MUST have this album. Just one listen and you will know why Angela has an angel's voice!

I grew up listening to Angela Bofill on vinyl in the late seventies and her music has always been soothing to the soul. But when it came time to try to buy her debut record as a Cd for a long time you couldn't. I am so glad that her debut album was reissued this year because I am now able to listen to the Cd all day. You can listen to the whole Cd from front to back because of her awesome voice and lyrics. I especially love, "Under the Moon and Over the Sky" because it's uplifting to the heart, mind, and soul and allows you to be free. Ms.Bofill is an awesome vocalist who has never really gotten her due and when you sit down and listen to this Cd it will blow you away. I am so glad that her debut was reissued because I am able to go back to the days of my childhood and enjoy her beautiful voice. The slow songs bring back great quiet storm memories from back in the day. Ms.Bofill's music will never go out of style!

I was so happy to see this album on cd-reissued. I was ten years old when I first heard Angie's then 'album' and fell in love with her voice. It is so rich and sensuous. She really stands out vocally to new and young divas. Her talent is so underappreciated it's a real travesty. Her later work is okay, but this is essential Bofill. A must if you want to appreciate her talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Angie" Sails!, June 15, 2001
By

Angela Bofill's 1978 debut "Angie" is an exhilarating excursion into the artistry of an underrated and overlooked vocalist. From the beginning, Bofill's enchanting vocals are set under sail as she nimbly navigates the fanciful "Under The Moon And Over The Sky." The voyage continues with various odes to love ("This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "Baby, I Need Your Love") and world harmony ("Children Of The World United"), each handled with impressive agility. On "Summer Days," Bofill's mannered phrasing and emotive charm -- qualities most music listeners associate with Patti Austin or Vanessa Williams -- washes through a romantic haze with clarity and resolve. Overall, "Angie" is a lyrical and thoughtful collection, which should satisfy lovers of neo-soul and smooth jazz music.

[Note: Digitally remastered CD contains original liner notes, credits, and artwork. Additional liner notes feature interview with Bofill by David Nathan, author of "The Soulful Divas." Total playing time: 39:46.]

5.0 out of 5 stars What else can I say except... A CLASSIC!!!, October 27, 2005
This review is from: Angie (Audio CD)
Who cares about the CD reissue? The original vinyl LP release is still unmatched in terms of sonic fidelity and overall classic-ness! Okay, I guess you can play the CD in the car.

I never owned "Angie" in the past, as I was really young when it came out. But then I found a decent used vinyl copy of it at my client's record store and bought it for $3.00 for one and one reason alone: "This Time I'll Be Sweeter."

VINYL IS THE BEST, ESPECIALLY FOR JAZZ AND FUNK GENRES WHERE INSTRUMENT CRISPNESS CAN ONLY BE REPRODUCED FAITHFULLY VIA ANALOG.

I remember Angela Bofill's debut album for Artista in 1979 because not only had we sung together in the All City Chorus, but I played the album to death in college. The music on this cd is timeless. It would be hard to put Angela Bofill in one genre, but a fusion of jazz, latin rhythms, R&B are just a few that come to mind.
Opening strong with with "Under The Moon And Over The Sky", wriiten by Angie, is mysterious and exotic, and would have made a great soundtrack for a movie. "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" is a strong beutiful ballard written by the late Gwen Guthrie and is one of Angela's singnature songs that charted #104 US; #23 US R&B. "Baby I Need Your Love" and "The Only Thing I Would Wish For" are two delightful ballard penned by Angie, the former with the extremely talented Dave Valentin on flute, the latter written when she was only 17. Ashford And Simpson's upbeat "Rough Times", previously recorded by Candi Staton, is vocally superior with that special edge, maybe because Patti Austin and Gwen Guthrie on background vocals! "Summer Days" is a melodic and pensive song that is a typical Angela Bofill ballard. "Share Your Love" is a jazz fusion song with latin rhythms, it's the type of song that gives everyone a chance to shine. The album closes strong with a song of hope, peace and love called "Children Of The World United"." If there ever was one song to descibe Angie's persona, this would be the one.

Unfortunately Angela Bofill suffered a stroke in 2006 and then another in 2007. But thanks to her strong determination and faith, her therapy has been successful because she is talking and though she is not yet singing publically, she is touring with "The Angela Bofill Experience" which is a restrospective of her live through narration, multimedia and song. I caught her act in NY at the Blue Note (Sept. 7th, 2011) and she was just as sweet with the sense of humor that I remember she had in the 70's.

This album was reissued on cd in 2001 and I am thankful they did because I had long since worn out my cassette. Hopefully this will give younger audiences an opportunity to hear one of the greatest vocalists/musicians to come out of the 70's/80's. And if the Angela Bofill Experience comes to your town (check out her website), be sure to show your support..it only gets "sweeter." With great msuci and good liner notes, you can't go wrong with this purchse.
