5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful oldies, January 29, 2001

This review is from: Angola 60's: 1956-70 (Audio CD)
Angola 60's is an amazing collection of oldies from Angola. It has a nice mix of folkloric and more westernized selections. I was surprised by the sound quality, on most 60s collections the sound is tiney. The sound is excellent and the songs are very compelling. The influence of the other Lusophone musics of Brazil, Portugal, and Cape Verde is evident in these recordings, but so is the influence of Congo. The general feel of Angolan music is a triangulation of these influence; there are the meloncholy songs we expect and also some hot dance numbers. The whole series is wonderful. I plan on getting all six cd's. The series is a must for anyone seriously interested in the music of the Black Atlantic or the history of African pop music.

2.0 out of 5 stars Angola lacks, June 22, 2000

If you are an anthropology student, or deeply into african music appreciation you will enjoy this cd. For those looking for an easy listening hip cd I would stay away. I suggest Bonga for cool Angola music.
