Despite reforms in the American high school, not much has changed, according to the author. Wahington, D.C.-based journalist Wooster examines the American high school since the 1850s but leaves it to the reader to judge what new directions need to be pursued. The result, though not extensive, is a concise and informative history. Chapters focus on moral education, principals and teachers, school organization, and school choice. Readers interested in reform will find the chapter on moral education substantial and pertinent. Wooster covers a number of research studies, including those of Harvard's Lawrence Kohlberg (e.g., Moral Education, Justice, and Community , Columbia Univ. Pr., 1989). The book is clearly written, accessible, and very well documented. For serious education collections.

This excellent (and unjustly neglected) survey gives an interesting account of how American education has reached the state it finds itself in today. Add Wooster to the list of required reading for educators.
