4.0 out of 5 stars saw this coming and digging it, January 13, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
i've been listening to b.fleischmann for a while now and own all the albums. he's been venturing towards this route and i'm totally happy with it. Even though I've never been a fan of local austin artist Daniel Johnston, he's appropriate in Phones, Machines and King Kong. it may take some getting used to if you want the old b.fleischmann but i think if you have any taste and desire something more and different from an artist, check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars B. Fleischmann - Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung!, October 3, 2011
B. Fleischmann returns for more shoegaze-inspired electronics on ANGST IS NOT A WELTANSCHAUUNG! But instead of the Cocteau Twins or Lush, he goes, interestingly enough, for the Mojave 3 end of 4AD. Listen to how the opener, "Hello," has hints of blues thanks to the lyrics of Sweet William Van Ghost. But the shoegaze comes to the forefront with "24.12," even with the contrasting vocals of Sweet William and Marilies Jagsch. On "Last Time We Met at a T&TT Concert," the drama comes in the form of a pizzicato versus melodium war, while "In Trains" goes back to that bluesy rock quality. Fleischmann takes the vocals himself on "Still See You Smile" for a delicate, up-in-the-clouds track, while Daniel Johnson gives an odd turn on "Phones, Machines And King Kong," a retelling of the film to a loping beat. "The Market" relies on a quick beat for its energy, even as the voices insist 'No!' and "Playtime" has a syncopated chord to keep things lively. The final track, "Even Your Glasses Miss Your Eyes," returns again to the shoegaze, and the hidden track swells with an orchestral grace. Angst might not be a world-view, but it certainly makes for some great music.

2.0 out of 5 stars He's Lost It. Really Too Bad., November 18, 2008
By
When the first track "Hello" started and I heard B. Fleishmann singing I knew it was too good to be true that he'd chosen the right direction and gone fully instrumental. Now he's got a heroin induced female counterpart and the two together sound like "The National" without the live rock band behind them, especially on the dragging, organ laden "In Trains." The electronic beauty he so successfully executed on "Welcome Tourist" is nearly null from this record.

He does stay true to his IDM / electronic roots with "Last Time We Met at A T&TT Concert" and "Market," so if you're a one-song listener, just buy these two.

Finally, I hate to say it, but WHAT THE HELL is "Phones, Machines and King Kong" ? He samples some teenage boy or small-sounding woman half talking, half singing like a pre-pubescent Lou Reed. This is just not good, which again is really too bad, because the music behind this terrible voice is actually beautiful.

I do not recommend this album.
