The great bandleader and bandoneonist Anibal Troilo recorded enough great music to fill a good-sized box set with "sus mejores momentos", so this CD is certainly not the last word on what his best work is. Every Troilo orchestra had a different sound, and many songs on this CD have been recorded by several of his orchestras. However, the compilers of this CD did a good job in giving the listener a sampling of the various Troilo instrumental stylings. One of my favorite "guardia vieja" tangos, Quejas de Bandoneon, opens the selection. Other favorites present here are Astor Piazzolla's Triunfal, Chique, El Marne, and that all-time classic La Cumparsita. One negative, which does not detract from the quality of the music, is the utter lack of liner notes as well as the misspelling of the title of the first cut on the insert. Troilo's bands were some of the most popular of the 1930s and 1940s and he was innovative enough that his popularity endured to the end of his life. Whether you are an old fan of Anibal Troilo or new to the tango scene, you will find "Sus Mejores Momentos" to be a very danceable CD and a good sampling of Troilo's many triumphs.

Yes, Aníbal Troilo is one of the all time great names of tango, and yes, his 50s recordings are musically outstanding. But sonically these LP transfers on the Mexican label Orfeón are poor - even his 40s recordings have better fidelity. Orfeón may have acquired the rights to these recordings on Music Hall but they audibly have not acquired the masters, which are still believed to be languishing in a vault somewhere in Bs.As. Nevertheless, collectors will be buying this to hear what Troilo was doing in the early 50s. If you're looking for your first Troilo cd, or for something with adequate fidelity to play at a milonga, you must look elsewhere

A classic! Many people may have Argentine Tango compilations with the works of many of the great musicians, and I respect that. I have many compilations myself. This disk is the real thing. In music, you come to the point where you learn the difference between a lesser orchestra doing "covers" and a really great orchestra doing "the real thing." I like Troilo --- this is the third disk I have purchased. Earlier this year I purchased «El Gordo y el Polaco, » referring to the music of Troilo and Goyenche, a famous tango singer. This is great.

In Argentine tango, there are certain orchestras that will form the basis of a tango collection. They include the "Big 8" orchestras: Osvaldo Pugliese, Carlos Di Sarli, Francisco Canaro, Angel Vargas/Angel D'Agostino, Ricardo Tanturi, Miguel Caló, Juan D'Arienzo, and Anibal Troilo. I like the sophistication of Troilo's orchestra. It is a "sweet" sound. Troilo's bandoneón brings out many emotions. There are contemporary orchestras that play "in the style of Troilo," such as Emilio Balcarce's Orquesta Escuela de Tango. In spite of all that, there is still just one Anibal Troilo for me.

If you look at the play list, you will note that there are songs written by other tango musicians such as Filberto, Piazzola, Firpo, and others. You recognize names of songs such as "Quejas de Bandoneón," "La Cumparsita," "El Entrerriano," "El Pollo Ricardo," and other familiar names. These are not to be dismissed as being merely "covers." They have strong musical merit of their own. I love this collection, and I feel that it should have appeal to people who want good A. T. music in their collection, whether they are tango fanatics or disk jockeys that want to have some good tango music. This is the disk for you.
