5.0 out of 5 stars What hip hop is supposed to sound like, January 17, 2008
This review is from: Animal 2000 (Audio CD)
Too often talented and innovative artists are ignored. Eddie Castellanos a.k.a. "A.D.O.R." is one of them. A.D.O.R. had a hit in the summer of 1992 with the Pete Rock produced "Let It All Hang Out" on Atlantic Records. It was only released on 12 inch vinyl and cassette single. I had the cassette. I can still remember the video on Rap City and the infectious horn sample. Unfortunately, due to label disputes A.D.O.R. was dropped from Atlantic and his album was shelved. However, like any true hip hop soldier he persevered on. He later formed his own label - Tru Reign Records and released his shelved album called "Enter The Center", "Animal 2000", and "Signature Of The Ill". Enter The Center was later rereleased as the album "Shock Frequency" with basically the same tracks but a few different ones. A.D.O.R. vowed never to leave the fate of his career in the hands of any other record company but his own. Animal 2000 is probably his best album. Production is darker than Shock Frequency and doesn't have its feel good vibe. All his albums are good but with this one I can listen to it all the way through without skipping tracks. It took me about two or three spins to really get into this album but once I did I was hooked for life. The sound quality is slightly below that of a major label release, but for a record on an independent label thats to be expected. It doesn't take away from the music and if you've got a good sound system it won't even matter. Every song is a banger but it will probably take you a few listens to really get into it. Trust me, its like no other hip hop you've ever heard before. The whole album is only a little over 30 minutes long so its pretty short. But what it lacks in duration it makes up in quality. Production is top notch and A.D.O.R. was always lyrically murderous. If you love underground hip hop or just real hip hop in general, check out A.D.O.R. and get this album. Shock Frequency and Signature Of The Ill are also dope. Check em out. Peace.
