Book Description

5 and up
From feathers to fur and scales to skin, Animal Baths explores the fun and creative ways the world s animals get clean. Human baths are kinda boring: all you need is soap, water, and a fluffy towel. Animal baths, however, are great fun. Imagine rolling in dust or mud to get clean horses, elephants, and rhinoceros do. Imagine using your paws like a washcloth and your spit like water cats, squirrels, and rabbits do. Imagine cleaning yourself by shedding your outer layer of skin snakes, frogs, and lizards do. Tired of cleaning yourself every day? Just get someone else to do your dirty work. Water buffalo and giraffes use birds to clean their fur, while zebras use their large teeth to clean a friend s fur. Monkeys and lemurs have their fur groomed by close friends and relatives, while turtles and coral animals have their shells and surfaces cleaned by fish and shrimp. Charming illustrations and fun text will make this book a favorite bedtime story. Includes glossary and index.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—Written in a conversational tone, this book is divided into three parts based on how animals clean themselves (example: "Mud, Dust, and Poop"). Each section begins with a brief description of how and why they engage in specific activities, followed by a spread about which ones utilize this method. A full-page, softly colored drawing of the animals "bathing" faces each page of text. This fascinating book provides some unusual details about the unique behavior of the featured creatures.—Christine Markley, Washington Elementary School, Barto, PA END

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully illustrated!, October 31, 2009
This review is from: Animal Baths: Wild and Wonderful Ways Animals Get Clean! (Hardcover)
There's a gentle, sympathetic quality to this charmingly illustrated book, which contains an amazing amount of information. My family and I were surprised to learn that birds must bath frequently or risk being slowed in flight by dirty feathers; that praying mantises have their ears on their antennae which they must keep scrupulously clean. And who knew how porcupines clean themselves (ouch?) - absolutely fascinating. My youngest is very taken with the final full page illustration: "It's like bath time at our house!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Treat for after the kids bath, October 30, 2009
This review is from: Animal Baths: Wild and Wonderful Ways Animals Get Clean! (Hardcover)
The grandkids loved this book. They ( and I ) never realized how important it is for animals to keep clean. Interesting to see how many types of baths there are. Speaking as a frugal Scot, this has lots of bang for the buck--almost 50 pages of neat stuff.
Where were science books like this when I was young ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Every Page Is a Surprise, October 21, 2009
This review is from: Animal Baths: Wild and Wonderful Ways Animals Get Clean! (Hardcover)
My kids usually like books with really bright colors so I would not have chosen this book, but my son found it in our library and checked it out so many times that I finally bought a copy for our home library. I love watching him learn so much about animals and their behavior -- he is becoming a biologist before my eyes.
