Diane Pomerance received her Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor She has also been certified as a Grief Recovery Specialist from the internationally recognized Grief Recovery Institute. She counsels those grieving from any loss; however she has a special interest in helping those mourning the loss of a beloved animal companion. The loss of a pet can be devastating to adults as well as children.

Dr. Pomerance is the author of seven nonfiction books about animals and the roles they play in our lives and in our world. Her first book was WHEN YOUR PET DIES designed to help children cope with and recover from grief over the loss of a pet. Her next book was ANIMAL COMPANIONS: YOUR FRIENDS, TEACHERS & GUIDES which encourages children to respect and appreciate animals. ANIMAL COMPANIONS IN OUR HEARTS, OUR LIVES & OUR WORLD came next and urges children to recognize that all life is meaningful and purposeful, and that all creation is interconnected and interdependent.

This book was followed by ANIMAL ELDERS: CARING ABOUT OUR AGING ANIMAL COMPANIONS which observes the many life lessons we can learn from our aging and elderly animals and how similar their aging process is to our own.PET PARENTHOOD came next and is designed to help potential "pet parents" decide whether to adopt a pet and if so, how to find the one best suited to their lifestyle and budgets. FINDING PEACE AFTER THE LOSS OF A LOVED ANIMAL COMPANION helps people of all ages cope with and recover from grief and to further understand the unique and powerful bond that exists between humans and animals. OUR RESCUE DOG FAMILY ALBUM is Dr. Pomerance's seventh book and, featuring beautiful color photographs, is an homage and tribute to the over forty dogs she has rescued, adopted and rehabilitated. The book shares the often sad and poignant stories of the dogs she came to know and love.

The author does a good job in explaining the symbiotic role that animals and humans have on Earth. We interact with the same water, soil and atmosphere and what each of us does to those features affects all of us. Her approach is more that of the Native Americans than that of Western Civilization. In my opinion that is a good thing. The Judeo-Christian approach of conquering and subjugating nature to our whims has led to a great deal of wanton destruction of the environment. If the current opinions of leading scientists are true, the consequences of global warming could be catastrophic.

It is true that animal species are our fellow travelers on Earth, they too have a right to existence without being unduly exploited. In particular, pets give us so much in return for our simply taking care of them. They love us, comfort us and always take us as we are. Your cat does not care if you are overweight, can't spell cat or even balance a chemical formula. No matter how bad your day has been, they are glad to see you and clearly demonstrate that they have missed you during the day. Loving animals is a way to love yourself and the world, and Pomerance says these things so very well.
