From Library Journal
Conveniently compiling public health information recently published by various agencies of the U.S. government, this volume addresses diseases transmitted through food, water, animals, or insects and also the health concerns of international travelers. A strength is its coverage of diseases recently in the news, such as deadly E. coli and hantavirus outbreaks. Other topics are of perennial interest, such as how safely to prepare Thanksgiving turkey or avoid travelers' diarrhea. Coverage often overlaps between documents (there are two different tables on how long to keep frozen food), and format varies: some selections are written in simple question-and-answer form for the general public, while others are rather technical recommendations for healthcare personnel. Another more consistent and convenient source for most of the same information is Phyllis Stoffman's Family Guide to Preventing and Treating 100 Infectious Illnesses (LJ 7/95). Stoffman's book also provides specific treatment recommendations and sources for more information. For larger consumer health collections.
