Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- Informative and thought-provoking. All sides of the issue from moral philosophy, speciesism, and animal suffering, to proposals for legislation, current medical research, and animal-activist groups are explored. Well-known animal-rights activists are represented, as well as supporters of animal experimentation. Easy to read, well referenced, and well organized.

From Library Journal

These two titles fall under the sociology category; they focus on the philosophy and ethics of animal issues rather than on the animals themselves. Not necessarily directed toward animal lovers, both volumes will attract students of philosophy, social science, and history. Animals and Society , which has a British slant, traces the social history of the animal rights movement from medieval days to the present. Tester examines the entire issue of animal rights in the light of historical sociology, quoting liberally from the works of social scientists such as Michel Foucault, Norbert Elias, Claude Levi-Strauss, and Peter Singer. He argues that human attitudes toward animals are an invention that says more about humans than about animals. Animal Experimentation is a collection of essays discussing the use of animals for experimental purposes from both sides of the issue. The editors address the philosophical question, "Do we have moral responsibilities toward animals?" Included are views of animal rights activists and responses to those views; a defense of the use of animals for research and a critique of same; a statement by deans of medical schools with proposals regarding the conditions of animals used in experimentation; and a final essay challenging assumptions on both sides. Both volumes are well written and documented. Animal Experimentation would be useful in academic and large public libraries, while Tester's more scholarly volume would find its best audience in academic libraries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives a good depth into the Animal Rights issue, January 18, 1999

This review is from: Animal Experimentation: The Moral Issues (Contemporary Issues) (Paperback)
The essays contained within this book are well chosen, however those supporting the use of animals in research (most of them) simply attack the articles written for the support of animal rights. Whereas the animal rights articles address the issues involved with experimentation. This book is worth reading however should be supplemented with other books to get a good knowledge base about the issues. I would suggest Animal Liberation by Peter Singer as a good start or Diet for a New America by John Robins.

3.0 out of 5 stars Philosophical arguements for and against animal experimentation, August 6, 2006
This review is from: Animal Experimentation: The Moral Issues (Contemporary Issues) (Paperback)
What attracted me to this book was that it had both pro and anti experimentation essays. I guess it wasnt quite what I expected. I was hoping the essayists would back up their positions with lots of examples, statistics, and the like, but actually their arguements are more philosophical. You do get a wide spectrum of all the views from extreme speciest essays (such as the one by Cohen), to more middle ground essays (Hettinger), and even ones calling for direct action (the second essay by Singer). This book is, however, slightly older, and a lot of the arguements made against giving animals rights do not hold... at least for certain animals found to be esp. cognizant (like chimps, gorilla, orangutans, and parrots).

Its important to read about such a controversial issue, but I wish they including more facts (instead of saying 'there are many unnecessary experiments' explain which ones exist or instead of simply stating 'we cured polio because of animals' explain how...). This may not be the best book exploring both sides of the issue, but there are few unbiased books like this one.
