Book Description

3 and upP and up
Who better than Anthony Browne to give the traditional ANIMAL FAIR a whole new spin - along with a few flips, pulls, and pop-ups?

I went to the animal fair.
The birds and the beasts were there.
The big baboon, by the light of the moon,
Was combing his auburn hair.

For the first time, acclaimed children’s book artist Anthony Browne puts his mastery into motion - with a trip to the Animal Fair! Inspired by the well-known verse, this exuberant excursion features animals of all kinds twirling on rides, falling out of bunks, sliding down elephants’ trunks, and performing other surprising stunts, with a little help from their friends, of course. Children who love to pull tabs, turn wheels, and flip flaps - not to mention Anthony Browne fans of all stripes - will want to visit this topsy-turvy fair again and again.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anthony Browne takes on the lyrics of Animal Fair: A Spectacular Pop-Up with equal gusto. Readers first spy what appears to be a run-of-the-mill carousel, but a pull of the tab reveals "The birds and the beasts were there" (riding on the backs of the people). A big baboon combs his hair by the light of the (outhouse) moon and a monkey meanders the midway. Ages 3-up.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3-Browne's first pop-up is a colorful, if sometimes enigmatic, interpretation of the popular nonsense song. At the animal fair, the big baboon, along with a host of ghosts and other creatures, lurks behind a dozen flaps on the Haunted House; carousel horses change to human figures with the pull of a tab; and the elephant's spread-filling sneeze sends the hapless (but sober, in this version of the lyrics) monkey soaring up almost half a foot. Most of the effects are standard issue, and won't survive rough handling, but there's enough variety in the moving parts to hold the attention of school-aged children, while the plethora of flaps will keep younger ones enthralled. And, of course, there are apes to discover on every spread.

I bought this book at "bargain price" at Amazon.com and I am very satisfied with the purchase. The book not only has popup pages, but also has numerous interactive features. Every page has a different kind of feature (many are hidden) that encourages kids to hunt for them.

Very entertaining and keeps children busy.
