Animal Figurines by Mike Schneider,
By Nanette Marks (Honey Brook, PA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Animal Figures (Paperback)
This book is truly a waste of money unless you like looking at pictures of ceramic animals, and nothing more. There is no consistency, and little information. It is sorted by manufacturer in the beginning, and then switches to sorting by animal, and then it switches to sorting by type (what it's made of, what it's used for). Any company history information written in this book can be grabbed right off the internet. It's shallow and incomplete. There is no rhyme or reason for the items that were chosen for the photos. If it's breakable, and an animal, it could probably go in this book. The captions on the pictures merely describe what you see, such as "Dog with duck", and what it reads on the bottom, if anything. And it gives a height. The names of the types of animals aren't even correct. It refers to a Boxer figurine as being the same breed as a Bulldog. It labels a Basset Hound as a Beagle. They even question in the caption "..the dog, or is it a fox?". I have my copy up for sale. Can't wait to get some money back for this.

This was one of the most helpful books on the subject. My only regrets are that it there wasn't more of it!

Save yourself some money!,
By Phil (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Animal Figures (Paperback)
I am an antique dealer, I bought this book years ago and never really use it because does not contain much useful information. I bought an elephant today that's American made and dated 1939. I can't make out the mark and started going through some books. I saw this book and started going through it. I forgot just how useless this book really was. It is a collection from the author I would guess. Far too many pieces not researched and not identified as to the maker. The book tells you things like ceramic pig 4" long. Hello if you have the piece I think you would know this. My advice is to save your money and buy another book. I am surprised Schiffer published this thing to be honest. Most of their books are quite good.

Mr. Schneider has a fantastic grasp of the collectibles. Great photographs by his wife, Cindy. What a wonderful book! Thank you!
