Book Description

A stand-out character in an entertainment industry where persona is everything, George “The Animal” Steele shares how he balanced his real life as Jim Myers, a highly respected high school teacher and coach, with the green tongued, hairy backed, turnbuckle eating wrestling icon he was in the ring. The memoir delves into the golden era of wrestling in the 1970s and 1980s and his entry into the World Wrestling Federation where he earned a spot in professional wrestling history despite only speaking in animal-like grunts. In reality, the educated man that overcame his struggles with dyslexia and Crohn’s Disease was a father and an inspiration to many of his students and players, and the dichotomous personalities that marked this much-loved man’s life are explored in his own words. The book is filled with nostalgic and humorous anecdotes about the whirlwind life of wrestling alongside such notables as Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino, both in and out of the ring.

2.0 out of 5 stars It was just okay June 14, 2013

If you are looking for a book that chronicles "The Animal's" wrestling career, this is not that kind of book. The book is really more about his struggles with his learning disability and being able to overcome it and help others like him through his coaching and teaching career. I would have liked to have seen a more balanced presentation of both his wrestling career and his personal life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Entertaining May 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
WOW! I realized I knew little about wrestling icon George "The Animal" Steele other than superficially from t.v. or wrestling magazines. What a pleasure it is to meet Jim Myers, George's alter ego. However, unlike the green tongued, turnbuckle eating wrestling heel, Jim is a gentle giant both physically and morally. I'd never have pictured him as a respected educator, family man, counselor and still wrestling ambassador. But he is. And he so loves to tell you about all his facets. Reading about his struggles with dyslexia, living hand to mouth, the politics of education and wrestling were told by a man who has found peace telling you his stories as if he pulled up a chair and shared them with you one on one. So often told with excitement, humor, forgiveness and love. Thank you Jim....George, for writing such an inspiring and entertaining book. And thank you for all you've done in and out of the ring

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed July 1, 2013
By Dennis
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For a man whose career spanned decades the short amount of time spent on his professional career was disappointing. While I admire Mr.Steele,s fight against Crohn disease and his background I was hoping for more first hand stories of his professional career. I would have liked to know more of the original George Steele before he became the cartoon character. I have met George in person and he is a fountain of wrestling stories. I wish more were told in his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars the george steele you didnt know August 13, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
jim meyers aka george animal steele has always been a favorite of mine. From the time I was 14 I saw every match I could when he would wrestle in my home town. From Brighton beach, the defunct sunnyside gardens, to Madison Square Garden back in the 70s thru the 80s. His autobiography gave me more of an inside view to the best bad guy in wwe history. Iwould have love to be a student in his class. I deeply enjoyed the book, a definite read for any wrestling fan. Especially of Jim Meyers aka George Steele.

5.0 out of 5 stars SURPRISINGLY IMPRESSIVE !!! August 18, 2014

After reading the reviews, I wasn't expecting much. Not being a wrestling fan my perspective may be different. GREAT book, enjoyable read. Read in one night. There were a couple times I wasn't sure who was talking but I was so absorbed in the story I didn't care. Lot's of wrestling info. (as one would expect) Not sure what those who complained were looking for. Perhaps dirt ? None here. Though there are two inappropriate sentences that if left out of the book would of made it suitable for ALL ages. Parents Be Warned. Frankly I could of done without the visual as well. Odd from a man who only does Family appearances. Remarkable life. From a man who's overcame much, gave much & still does. You go 'Animal' ! Sign me, New Forever Fan.

While I knew there was a man behind the "animal" I never knew the depth to the story. Grew up watching wrestling in the 80's and 90's so the story took me back in time. What a great book !
