5.0 out of 5 stars Cardigain and again and again!!!! February 16, 2014
By J.Matt
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This review will be short and sweet. Very sweet. I loved The Cardigans since I discovered that they were the first band on the moon. As a band, they have released some incredible records, "Long Gone Before Daylight," being a favorite. I have always enjoyed Nina Persson's voice. It is truly original and very organic. I will not review each song in and of itself because it isn't necessary. This isn't The Cardigans and it isn't A-Camp. This is Nina Persson! With that being said, this is a fantastic record! Her voice is just as soothing as I remember it to be. You can tell her voice has matured and that is a good thing. It flowers some of the songs with a tinge of graceful raspiness. Just a tinge, mind you. In short, I am very excited about this album. Indeed, I hope it does well for her. Hopefully a hard copy will be easier to find real soon. You WILL NOT regret buying this record, so quit reading this silly review and BUY it already!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars I Like It. I Don't Love It. February 18, 2014
Format:Audio CD
While I can't say I was a huge fan of the Cardigans' biggest U.S. hit, 1996's "Lovefool", once they released the disk, 'Gran Turismo', I was hooked on them. That disk and all of the following ones were great. Unfortunately, 'Super Extra Gravity' was their last release - eight years ago.

But lead singer, Nina Persson, has her first solo disk out, 'Animal Heart'. I accidentally stumbled upon it the evening before it was released - I never saw a word about her doing this.

Persson has played and released music with another band, A Camp, and they had two or three decent songs, but nothing as stellar as the Cardigans.

You might say the same for 'Animal Heart'.

The songs have a similar structure as her "full-time" band - and you can see what she brings to the songwriting process for the band, but it is that old adage, you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

I'm always amazed that many think the lead singer is the band, but that "fact" is proven wrong time after time: Brandon Flowers (the Killers) solo disk bombed. Most Debbie Harry solo disks were not nearly as good as Blondie. Most of Stevie Nicks' solo work pales in comparison to how her bandmates helped compliment on her songs.

So the Cardigans - the rest of them - truly bring somethings to the table that are positive. Persson even did a better solo song with "Black Winged Bird" back in 2006.

Don't get me wrong: the songs on 'Animal Heart' are fine, but I don't know I'd call many as stand-outs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catchy but Deep Album with as always Pure Voice September 4, 2014
Format:Audio CD
While Nina Persson's voice has changed quite a lot since her early Cardigans days, it still has a pretty purity/clarity to it that makes listening to her music a really enjoyable experience. This album is more soulful/folksy than the earlier albums that made me fall in love with her and the Cardigans' music, but there is still much to be appreciated here, such as the nice and sometimes deep lyrics (which always impress me, especially since English isn't her first language) and that remaining clarity quality that has always made her voice saccharine-like. What I like about this album more than the Long Gone Before Daylight album and some of the stuff she's done while in A-Camp is that the country-like music sound has been set aside for the most part by use of 80's-like synthesizers sounds and poppy elements, which combined with her deep, folksy voice, gives it a raw, exposed but catchy feel. Weird yet good combination of sound and voice in the end. Definitely an enjoyable album to listen to now and in days to come!

Whether with the Cardigans, A Camp or solo, Nina has been one of my very favorites through the last 20 years. Always unpredictable, with each of her milestones she always manages to conjure up a new sound. She challenges herself quite a bit on this album and seems to get out of her comfort zone even getting into some gospel on one of the songs. Clever lyrics, catchy tunes and nice variation make these songs fun and interesting to listen to.
