Grade 3-6-- A humorous look at several adaptations in the animal world that are somewhat similar in purpose to human inventions. Examples include sonar and sound vibrations used by bats, dolphins, and whales; insulating fur and feathers akin to long underwear; and scales that grow over snakes' eyes for protection and moisture retention similar to contact lens. The entertaining text is clearly written, and the full-color photographs are of good quality. The information is available in many sources including wildlife encyclopedias, but this book has an interesting and unusual slant. Additionally, Maynard encourages readers to study nature and find their own parallels.
