My almost-2-year-old boy asks us to read this book to him multiple times a day. The illustrations are good, and the story (to the extent there is one) makes sense and is engaging. The illustrations are probably too busy for a really young toddler, though. Lots going on here.
I question some of the descriptions of instruments, though. An animal wearing a wrap-around tuba is described as "trumpeting", and an animal playing what appear to be bagpipes is said to be playing the fife. Perhaps these terms were interchangeable long ago, but for now it's not accurate and just a slight bummer to have to change the text as you go.

This is a wonderful book. It is written with rhyming sentences & has great illustrations by Richard Scarry. It introduces children to musical instruments. I enjoyed it as a child & memorized it & I can still recite it to this day. I think all children will love it.

I got this book for my little girl at 8 months, lost it a few months later, such a well written book with so many wonderful animals for her to learn and be able to pick out of a crowd, the story is perfect for little kids. She totally has the words memorized with the hand motions and knows all the animals, we are now learning the instruments. great book at any age.

Cute and Great Introduction to Instruments,

This book is so sturdy and that is why it appealed to me in the library. But the story is super fun. It teaches kids to identify both animals and the instruments they play, with a fun rhyme that makes you able to hear the wonderful music in your imagination. My daughter, at one year of age, really seemed intrigued by the illustrations and I think she enjoyed the flow of the story.

I'm so excited to have been able to add this to my daughters library. The book is brand new, the cardboard cover hasn't even been creased. The images are totally vintage though, and the story is way too cute. I'm exceptionally pleased with the purchase!

I am not a regular reviewer of children's books, but I feel it is worth my while to warn parents and grandparents that overly sensitive readers may find this disturbing. Years ago I was dating a girl aged 17 at the time. She told me in vivid detail how she would read this story over time after time, but was strangly upset when she got to the page of the yak playing a tuba. Something about his looks caused her to throw the book down and run and hide under her bed and cry.
She still had the book after many years and showed me this illustration, but much to my surprise I found it rather comical. It would be advisable in my opinion for parenst to screen the contents before passing it on to your little ones. Rumour has it that is soon to be a major motion picture!
