I would like to think that you wouldn't have to buy new batteries every month, but we're going to try to get an AC adapter.

When it was time to dispense the food, the product jammed and food did not dispense.

I bought this at CVS for $29.99 for our upcoming vacation and was very excited to see it in action. Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately) it malfunctioned the first time out of the box with an error message that couldn't be cleared without turning the machine completely off. Also, I had it set to dispense on the lowest setting of 1/4 cup and it when it came out it was WAY too much. We measured it and it was 1 cup of food which was 4 times the amount it was set for. I tried setting it for a different amount and different meal times, but the same thing happened every time. I'll be returning it ASAP and will be searching for a replacement.

I've had this dispenser since Christmas; after 7 months, here's what I've found...

- This dispenser cannot dispense a little amount of food. My vet said our 2 cats should have a quarter cup of kibble twice a day. The lowest setting is half a cup. So it's fine to feed both my cats, but if you only have one cat or a little dog, then it'll dispense too much.
- The lid on top doesn't lock. The lid simply pops off if it's knocked over, as I discovered in my car. If you have a large cat or dog, they can knock it over to spill the kibble, then it'll be a buffet!
- The ramp the kibble falls from the dispenser to the bowl is short and not long enough. The bowl is quite large, but when the kibble dispenses, it simply collects at the ramp occupying only a small part of the bowl. If you have 2+ cats/dogs, only one can eat at a time.
- If you watch my video, one of my cats just discovered if she reaches her paw into the dispenser, 1-3 kibbles will come out every time. So much for regulating my cats' diets!

This dispenser isn't all bad. It gets 2 stars because programming it is easy. It is very consistent with dispensing kibble. I like that the container is big so I don't have to constantly refill it. Also, it looks nice. But the problems with it outweigh the positives. I'd recommend looking elsewhere!

Verified Purchase
I bought one from my local CVS for about the same price in February. We were going away for 5 days. We put out extra water and 2 litter boxes for her and set this up even though my parents were going to check in on our kitty. This way they did not have to worry about what time them would come. However, they were unable to come as often as planned due to a family emergency. It was a great relief not worrying that our kitty was cared for even though no one was home.

We could see a dog knocking it over easily. A large open animal would be able to open it or knocking it over. Don't know if it's just our cat, but she never tries to knock it over.

The jar and the top are plastic, but the machine does the job. We have since been running it since February (it is now August) once a day and still on the same battery.

I did recommend it to a friend who is trying it out this weekend.

9/14/13 update>> we still have not problems, and by our assessment it still deserves 5 stars, but.....

My friend initially fell into the category of the other negative reviews. Boy did I feel bad, after all, I recommended it! She got it and it worked one day. She contacted the manufacturer who stated it would feed up to 9 times in one day (?) That did not make sense. So she returned it...incredibly easy return by the way, money back and easy return at the local ups store, no questions asked. She picked it up at the local Bed Bath and Beyond since she will be traveling soon and wanted to test it. $23.99 after coupon, and is very pleased, working well.

We've been very satisfied, and based on our personal experience, it still deserves 5 stars. Since February still going strong.

I bought this for $25,99 at CVS. The setup was easy and it worked flawlessly right out of the box. But then we realized it was dispensing more than half a cup, even though we had it set to the lowest possible setting, which is 1/4 cup. Then the clock messed up and it started feeding at the wrong times. I called the phone number on the manual and immediately got a very friendly customer support person, who told me that these problems were not normal and that I should either take it back to CVS or send it to them. I returned it to CVS for another one, and so far it is dispensing the right amount, but the clock isn't keeping time. I think that might be just because the batteries are now a month old. I would like to think that you wouldn't have to buy new batteries every month, but we're going to try to get an AC adapter.

The literature that comes with the device is terrible. The instructions for set-up are good, but information about anything else (like what sort of adapter to use) is pretty much nonexistent.

I received this product as a gift while taking care of a family member's cat. After a few days I noticed that it would dispense the food at a later and later time. Turns out that it was unable to maintain the correct time (something any cheap digital watch could do) and lost 1-2 minutes every hour, forcing me to constantly reset the time. There were a few other things I didn't like about the unit, but considering that the whole product was fundamentally flawed and couldn't even dispense food at consistent times, any other issues were moot. I'm going to return it as soon as I can find another product that knows how to tell time, but from what I've seen these automatic feeders are all pretty much crap.
