Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6–These stories detail the exploits of 10-year-old Keisha Carter's family as wildlife rehabilitators in Michigan. In the first title, they rescue a wandering alligator from the city pool. The creature gets lost one more time, and a frantic search ensues before it is finally transported to an alligator sanctuary. In Special Delivery, they rescue a wayward skunk, a baby crow, and an injured dog. Though the cast of animal characters is different in each book, certain themes persist. Readers will learn that it is important to treat wildlife appropriately and that each animal is different in terms of how one should interact with it. Another mainstay is the abundance of cozy, safe family moments, and the fact that each scenario draws to a realistic–yet gentle–conclusion. Cheerful cartoon illustrations highlight the overall snug and secure feeling. The books don't necessarily challenge readers emotionally, but they are solid nonetheless and will find an audience with animal lovers and those who enjoy mellow realistic fiction.Amy Holland, Hamlin Public Library, Rochester, NY

More About the Author

F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Growing up is a terribly hard thing to do. It is much better to skip it and go from one childhood to another." So, I tried growing up and it didn't suit me as well as going from one childhood to another. Which is to say, that to write children's books is to stay in touch with childhood. Which is to say, it's not a bad thing to stay in touch with the child-like senses of wonder and delight.

So I think I will. My recently redone website will introduce young readers to my books and to my weblog about developing your own creative spirit and rekindling or nourishing your sense of wonder and delight.

Young readers will think this is a really funny book! Their parents will probably enjoy it, too. While not what I expected from a book with the phrase "animal rescue" in the title, kids love animal stories and will certainly enjoy this one, even though it focuses more on the human characters than the alligator.

This book was very educating about Crocodilia. It follows an adventure of the Carter family and their family buisness: Carter Urban Rescue. When a baby alligator is stranded in the city pool, keisha and her family have to find a place for it to live. I recommend using this book for alligator facts.
See ya later, alligator!

Gator on the Loose was a hilarious book. While catching alligators in laundry baskets, and making sure the baby gets his yogurt, 10 year old Keisha and her family have lots of funny dialogue. I especially liked Razi, the little brother, and Grandma, who purses her lips at "OL"(Old Lady) things, like elastic jeans and glasses on a chain. I read the book in 3 days. I learned a lot about alligators. I highly recommend this book to anyone who still likes children's books and has a sense of humor.
