Grade 8 Up-- A great deal has been written on the subject of humane treatment of animals, but Pringle's offering is a welcome addition to the field. He presents a history of the relationship between animals and humans, and of our current use of them in experimentation and as a source of food. Extremes in all cases are presented, from those who feel that any contact with animals (including keeping pets) constitutes exploitation, to those who see animals as insensate objects to be used any way humans choose. The thrust of this book, however, is the thought-provoking middle ground. The gruesome descriptions of animal use in research is balanced by an account of discoveries in medical science not possible by any other means. The horrors of "factory" farming are juxtaposed with economics and social reality. This is not a book for the sentimental or the squeamish, nor does it provide ammunition for the insensitive in terms of animals' feeling. this book is short and to the point. each chapter focuses on different aspects of the animal rights movement, from animal testing to the use of animals for food. i read it in about 2 days and reccomend it to anyone interested in getting involved with the animal rights movement, from vegetarianism to being a caring consumer. please dont turn your back on these important issues.
