Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3–A rhyming, rhythmic, and lyrical charmer about zoo animals going on strike. It all starts when the elephants complain, We're paid only peanuts! All of the animals follow suit, reminiscent of Doreen Cronin's Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type (S & S, 2000). The monkeys demand, We want a nice pool in our pen!, the zebras demand root-beer floats, and the giraffes are wearing turtleneck sweaters from their heads to the floor... as camouflage. All is chaos as the zookeeper must pacify the animals, and there appears to be no end in sight until a first-time visitor burst into tears. It is only then, in a loud hush, that it becomes apparent to the residents just how important their job really is. The pages are bursting with color, whimsical expressions abound, and loads of laughter will be shared by all.–Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL

More About the Author

My life is a series of lessons and moments that see me to the next lessons and moments. Some moments are sweet, some scary, some a blur gone too fast and forever missed. I write for children because all of these steps started there, in childhood, and that sense of wonder, keen curiosity, and the ability to see things much kinder and more magical than they actually were, fades as time passes and years and experience claim your naivety. For me it is a feeling only rekindled when I am creating books, stories and poetry.

My children, family and friends are a great inspiration to me, and the support of my readers is a tremendous honor. It is always my desire to entertain children and encourage them to think about and explore their world, and the worlds beyond, embrace creativity, and love learning for the duration of their life. Knowledge comes through words, so for me literacy is the foundation of education, and it bears the fruit of intelligent and empathetic citizens of this world and humanity.

I bought this book since we also own "A Frog in the Bog" by Karma Wilson. Since that one was a favorite, I thought this book was a shoe in. Little did I know, it would quickly become the most popular book with all 3 boys (5 yrs-16 mo). They love the colorful animal illustrations & the rhythmic flow of the text. If they hear me reading it to one boy, they come running & want me to read it over & over. THIS BOOK IS A WINNER!!!

Both my 5 year old and 3 year old LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. The story is so cute and the pictures are great. Karma Wilson just has a wonderful way of capturing the imagination. Even my sons preschool loved this book. I read it during a summer story time and there were many age groups and even the bigger kids loved this book. It is definately a book for all ages!!! Well done Ms. Wilson!!!

My 3-year-old son loves this book. It has catchy rhymes that are silly and a lot of animal pictures. It is one of his favorite books and one I love to read as I can put a lot of feeling into it. This is one of Karma Wilson's funniest books and the illustrations are great.

What a great book! My Wife read it to my nephew to put him to be and he ABSOLUTELY loved it!

The best part about this book is the rhymes and pictures, sure. That's why the kids love it. But I think the message will have a lasting and positive impact!

Even if my nephew ends up being one of those ungrateful "animals" one day, he won't ever look for handouts. He'll realize that he's lucky enough - being quite the animal- to love what he does, and that he shouldn't make demands for a more comfortable work environment, or any accommodations besides food to eat and a place to sleep.

Because, at the end of the day, he might just make a girl cry.

{my thoughts} – This book was absolutely adorable. I loved the graphics, I loved the cute little story. It was a wonderful book. The graphics match the story nicely, and the story flows even nicer. I happen to be a fan of the zoo, jungle and well animals in general, but I happen to have a soft spot for giraffes. There were giraffes in the book and they looked just wonderful! EEEK!

I think that any child that enjoys animals will enjoy this book. It is a wonderful story, it isn’t to terribly long and most first graders should be able to mostly read it on their own! My youngest brought it home as his home reader and I loved it so much I decided to review it!

Our 2 and 5 year olds LOVE this book. We have lots of book types in our collection, and enjoy sandra boynton books, as well as "I love you stinky face" if this gives you any idea of the type of books my kiddos go for. This was purchased for the 2 year old, who loves it, and wants to read it every night. If you like being animated with your kids, try this out. Cute artwork, bright colors, and a downright silly rhyming story about the zoo animals protesting what they are paid or given is great for kiddos who love to read. It came recommended by another mom, and we're so glad we got it.
