The Investor Responsiblity Research Center (IRRC), an independent, nonprofit firm that publishes reports of contemporary social and public policy issues, here focuses on the animal protection movement and federal policy on consumer product testing. Following a discussion of current laws and types of animal testing, the report profiles nine U.S. companies that have been primary targets of animal rights activists. Data from a Department of Agriculture survey of corporations and noncommercial facilities (universities, hospitals, etc.) on their use of animals in testing are also supplied. Appendixes list U.S. animal protection groups, related trade associations, and alternative research centers. While the report is aimed at investors (particularly the section on companies that may be negligent in following animal testing laws), the book is written in lay language and thus provides a good summary on the subject for general readers.
