Better than you'd think, October 22, 2001
Critics have pretty much universally trashed all movies written by/starring SNL alumni from the early '90s, but 'The Animal' sits up there with 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore' as a solidly absurdist comedy. While not a classic, there's enough sustained "smart" dumb humor to make it definitely worthwhile. I've seen too many movies that catered towards the Lowest Common Denominator at every turn. While this one was definitely sold as such, it's much more a case of dumb humor for smart people.
And that Colleen is too darn cute. Her awkward performance was saved in the editing (watch as no dialogue shots stay on her for too long... if at all), but the camera definitely loves her.

Some Laughs, but Mainly Mind Numbing, November 22, 2001
The Animal had a really stupid plot, but I thought I would go and rent it anyway. I found that the movie had the humor, but was lacking a storyline, that seemed reasonable.
The Animal is about a looser, who wants to be a cop. But every time he takes the final exam (the physical part), he always fails. He cant seem to get a date, or get any respect from anyone. (Including a group of kids at the police station, which is hilarious). Then some man finds him after a horrific accident. And replaces most of his bodies parts with animal parts. Thus making him able to run, jump, swim, hear, and smell like an animal.
This film isnt too bad, but its not worth buy. One viewing is enough. If you want to see a good Rob Schneider film, go and rent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow". Most of The Animal is predictable.

The Comic and the Cutie, June 3, 2001
The Animal gets 4 stars from me just for making me laugh, out loud, with all the rest of the audience in the theater. And besides, who doesn't think Colleen Haskell is just too cute not to be on the big screen? I'm not someone who typically goes in for Jim Carey or Adam Sandler slapstick, Animal House fart-joke humor, but this one got to me. Its funny. Check it out. Rob's dolpin act and goat seducing scenes are utterly hilarious. I'm sure I'll buy this one on DVD when it comes out.
