Better than you'd think,

This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
Critics have pretty much universally trashed all movies written by/starring SNL alumni from the early '90s, but 'The Animal' sits up there with 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore' as a solidly absurdist comedy. While not a classic, there's enough sustained "smart" dumb humor to make it definitely worthwhile. I've seen too many movies that catered towards the Lowest Common Denominator at every turn. While this one was definitely sold as such, it's much more a case of dumb humor for smart people. And that Colleen is too darn cute. Her awkward performance was saved in the editing (watch as no dialogue shots stay on her for too long... if at all), but the camera definitely loves her.

Some Laughs, but Mainly Mind Numbing,

The Animal had a really stupid plot, but I thought I would go and rent it anyway. I found that the movie had the humor, but was lacking a storyline, that seemed reasonable. The Animal is about a looser, who wants to be a cop. But every time he takes the final exam (the physical part), he always fails. He cant seem to get a date, or get any respect from anyone. (Including a group of kids at the police station, which is hilarious). Then some man finds him after a horrific accident. And replaces most of his bodies parts with animal parts. Thus making him able to run, jump, swim, hear, and smell like an animal. This film isnt too bad, but its not worth buy. One viewing is enough. If you want to see a good Rob Schneider film, go and rent "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalow". Most of The Animal is predictable. DVD Special Features Included: • Region 1 encoding (US and Canada only)

Some good laughs... Not a bad movie,
By "sayandarula" (Norhtern California) - See all my reviews In "The Animal", Marvin Mange, played by Rob Schneider, is a police file clerk who is aspiring to be a cop to fufil the dreams of his deceased father, but, as hard as he tries, can't pass the police physical exam (even after taking it 4 times). Marvin, to put it simply, is a big loser that gets no respect in life. This changes after he is terribly maimed in a near-fatal car crash and is rebuilt with animal parts by a mysterious doctor. After this incident, Mange discovers that he has superhuman abilites which he uses to fight crime, and he is finally accepted on the police force. The only problem is that there is a side-effect with his new-found powers; Mange must control his overwhelming animal urges (sex drive, hunger, and bodily functions, to name a few). This movie wans't much on plot, but the crude humor and silliness of this film gives you a couple of good laughs and something to talk about for a while. "The Animal" isn't going into my Funny Movie Hall of Fame, but i enjoyed watching it.

Hilarious!,
This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
Rob Schneider is under-rated for being one of many SNL castoffs. People say the SNL bunch is untalented and rely on physical, stupid humor to float their movies--yeah that's true, but with the exception of Rob Schneider. Schneider is the ultimate goofy nice guy, and maybe it's because of that other goofy nice guy, Adam Sandler, we just skip over him because of the deficiency in the category. Maybe we are skipping some of the funniest material ever made. The Animals main faults are in the sad casting of Colleen from Survivor as his love interest--this woman cannot act; the reliance on bestiality to catch a few laughs--which I personally don't mind, I think it's hilarious to see him smack a goat's buttox as long as its a female; and the mediocre job of directing. Otherwise, for plot, it's hilarious.

What's the go guys?I cant see why everyone is giving this movie like 2 stars. It was a very good comedy.Rob is very good in this movie taking the animal roles very well.Marvin Mange (Rob Schneider) is a "wanna be" cop trying to follow his fathers footsteps but cant really make it.When he gets in a deadly car accident off a cliff, a mad scientist then puts him together with animal parts, and thats when all the laughter arrives. The DVD also has some nice special features such as : Theartical Trailers,Deleted Scenes, Comedy Central's Reel Comedy, Behind the Scenes Featurette, Production Notes and Commentaries. Anyway soon as this DVD hit the shelves i grabbed it and was not dissapionted at all.You will watch it alot especially when friends come over and dont know what to expect of it.If you enjoyed Duece Bigalow you will love this and anyone who wants to see Rob at his best i suggest this is the one to go with.If you are still not sure i strongly suggest to rent it as it is a must see.

Potential policeman and klutz Marvin (Rob Schneider) is always in direct competition with Sgt. Sisk (John C. McGinley) for popularity. Marvin has an accident that is life threatening; a passing experimental doctor repairs Marvin with a few parts from various available animals. Now Marvin with fighting to control his urges finds a new life style. He must question his character, while others including a beautiful dog walker Rianna (Colleen Haskell) think they know him.
We also must control our urges as the mob tracks down the animal with torch and gun.

"A Badger Can Lift Twenty Times His Body Weight! Can You Do That?",
This review is from: The Animal (Special Edition) (DVD)
"The Animal" is a lightweight comedy that uses animal-related slapstick to get laughs. Rob Schneider plays Marvin Mange, a none-too-bright lackey who wants to be a policeman. He is constantly taunted in achieving his goal by Ed Asner as Chief Wilson, and the wonderful John C. McGinley (who you will know from a similar portrayal in television's "Scrubs") as Sergeant Sisk. It's a given that there's a pretty girl up for grabs, this time played by the lovely Colleen Haskell, who is a fellow animal lover.
Mange has a terrible (and amusing; watch for the seal and a Bigfoot cameo) car accident that results in his being infused with animal parts, giving him various superhuman powers. (One of the crudest, yet entertaining, examples occurs in Ed Asner's office, and that's all I'm going to say about it.) Mange doesn't understand at first what has happened to him, and credits drinking badger milk for his newfound gifts; the "Badger Milk" infomercial and product are both quite amusing. I had no idea badger milk was so viscous! Marvin becomes a hero largely thanks to his superhuman sense of smell (don't even ask about this...) and rescues the Mayor's son from drowning in a lake, swimming like a dolphin. There is lots of animal related humor, some of it crude (e.g. orangutan flatus, regurgitating worms to a turkey vulture chick, territorial marking, hairballs, etc.) I was especially amused when he was fitted with a "satellite head" collar to prevent his chewing on himself: while it may not sound especially funny, it was a visually stunning effect. I could have done without Marvin's amorous overtures (with a Capra aegagrus hircus) while "Let's Get It On" oozes across the soundtrack, although he did get his just rewards in a rather amusing scene. After a string of chupacabraesque attacks on livestock, a hunt is on focused on Marvin, but all is not as it seems: I actually did not foresee the ending of the film, although I thought that Ed Asner summed it up pretty well with his final line, "These pantyhose are killing me." "The Animal" DVD features several extras including commentaries and a special feature called "Badger Delivery." When you turn the Badger Delivery option on, an icon is periodically displayed. When you make a selection on your remote when the icon is in view, an extra featuring Schneider comes up and explains extra footage that was edited out and then shows the clip. I had never seen that technique done quite that way, and I liked it. This film is fairly brainless and inoffensive. Unsurprisingly, it is occasionally crude, frequently stupid, but also more entertaining than I really expected it to be. While there are definitely better movies out there, you could definitely do worse. I give "The Animal" three stars because badgers are fun.
