Best Margot Album Yet,
By Joseph Lee (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Animal! [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
There are very few indie bands with an eclectic, varied and unconventional sound as Margot that can keep you engaged from track 1 to 14, and Animal! is fortunately one of these exceptions. Take The Dust of Retreat and polish it, bring the varied melodies a little more in tune and you'd have the kind of album that Animal! is. Perfect Margot without compromise and without convention. In comparison, Not Animal! is a shadow of the greatness that pervades this album. I cannot imagine this album without amazing tracks like Mariel's Brazen Overture and My Baby (Shoots Her Mouth Off).
All too often Indie music is different for the sake of being unconventional. The kind of superiority complex that compromises the simple idea that good music can be taken on its own merits, and philosophical stances shouldn't compromise the quality of music. In the end, talented artists involved in the pursuit of good music can forge provocative and lasting albums. Animal! without a doubt is a cacophony of varied melodies and moving lyrics, the kind of album that can make you forget your skip button and can be enjoyed on the sunniest of days or the darkest of nights. A terrific album.

A Terrible Addiction,
By Will Burroughs (Lawrence KS) - See all my reviews

Despite how much buzz is around Animal! and Not Animal! and which one the band likes more, both albums are wonderful. Personally when listening to Animal, it's not that these songs are definitively better than Not Animal! but instead are too good to get lost on some B-Sides, demos, and rarities disc sometime down the road. Richard's lyrics pour more personality and personal issues than most songwriters today. it leads to a very personal style yet still creates an umbrella for listeners to feel connected under.
Both this album and it's counterpart are brilliant.

This is, once again, a tremendous success from a breakthrough group of MUSICIANS... whether or not you consider yourself "into indie rock" this is a FANTASTIC group of intellectual and emotional pieces... it takes you on a compelling ride from start to finish (just like a good old fashioned 'album' is supposed to!). Don't be confused, the other new release from this group (entitled, simply, "Not Animal") is also a great collection of songs.
This is a must have for anyone who derrives pleasure from listening to a great piece of musical composition!!!!!!!

A dreary disappointment,

This album just drips with pretentiousness, but doesn't have the substance to back it up. Don't be fooled, this album will not become Margot's Pinkerton, it's just plain booooooring.
