Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Titles in the How Artists View series introduce art history and concepts by surveying how artists through the ages have explored a particular theme, such as weather, home, or nature. Here the subject is animals, and Hosack calls up an impressive range of artwork, from prehistoric cave paintings to work by iconoclastic contemporary artists. Her straightforward text encourages children to look closely at the well-reproduced images and to consider the artists' materials and how and why they have been used. Vocabulary (defined in an appended glossary) and appealing, hands-on project ideas appear along the way. Animal images are a universally successful way to connect children to art, and the examples here are expertly chosen: few children will be able to ignore Salvador Dali's
Lobster Telephone, for example. A creative and engaging choice for classroom use or children's personal browsing.
