Gr. 4-7. Middle-grade animal lovers seeking report topics will want to know about these slim volumes in the new Animals with Jobs series. Horse begins with an introduction to horse therapy, demonstrating how the horse's gentle motion provides exercise for people with physical and mental disabilities. Subsequent chapters address the qualities and training that make a good therapeutic horse, what happens at therapy sessions, and the history of the field, as well as contemporary competitive events. Dogs offers exciting anecdotes about crime-fighting "K-9s" and explains why dogs are so well suited to the work. Readers may be disappointed that there's no mention of the enormous role that rescue and police dogs played in the September 11 tragedies, and the further reading section in both titles is skimpy. Nonetheless, these are lively introductions to specialized topics that will grab student interest. Numerous photographs of varying quality further support the material. Gillian Engberg
