Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this exceedingly British memoir that manages to be both eccentric and wise, Balding reflects on growing up where horses were the family business. With a father who is not only a champion horse trainer but a royal trainer to boot, it was impossible to ever consider horses as anything other than the most important thing in their lives. Along with occasional diversions to salute some memorable dogs, Balding writes of her years in the saddle from learning to ride on a docile pony to a confrontation with Princess Anne while racing as a teenager. Her grandmother is the very definition of acerbic (shades of Downton Abbey), her mother channels Louisa Durrell, and her little brother is a more than willing partner in crime. As for her father, Balding makes clear he was the center around which their family orbited, and schedules for racing and training dominated their calendars. Even after she leaves for school, Balding cannot resist his pull and competes at his prescribed jockey weight in search of the big win. In the end, she provides a funny, poignant, thoroughly enjoyable peek into the business of being a Balding and her rollicking coming-of-age. --Colleen Mondor

About the Author

CLARE BALDING is an award-winning broadcaster and writer.  At the London Olympics of 2012 she was proclaimed a “national treasure'” and acclaimed as the gold medal winning presenter of the Games. She became the face of the BBC’s horse racing coverage in 1998, and now works across a wide range of sports for television and radio. She has been a lead TV presenter for the Olympics, Paralympics, Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Games. For more than twelve years, she has hiked across the British countryside for the BBC radio series Ramblings. In 2012 she was awarded Achievement of the Year at the Women in Film and TV Awards, the Media Award at the Red Hot Women of the Year Awards, was made TV Personality of the Year by Attitude Magazine and won Racing Broadcaster of the Year for the second time.  A British newspaper ran the headline, '”Why Can't Everyone Be Clare Balding?” Clare lives in west London with her partner, Alice, their wayward Tibetan terrier, Archie, and their cat, Itty.  None of them have shown much interest in any of the awards, which is just fine.

I had seen Clare Balding on a show on BBC America where she discussed the book which made me want to purchase it, and I'm very glad I did. Lots of great stories and chapters are named after animals in her life. I recommend it to everyone

I'm a horseperson through and through, and Clare Balding's memoir had me from word one. Her storytelling never flags, from dogs to ponies to horses to the (slightly less intriguing--for me, just because I loved reading about the animals so much) humans. I wept with her at the loss of faithful friends as she either outgrew them or they passed on, and smiled at her lively descriptions of her childhood antics with her brother. Beyond the tales of growing up riding, Clare also conveys a poignancy of feeling like an outsider. In a way, this makes her connection with animals all the more important.

Clare Balding's book gives an upclose first-hand look at the very precise world of horse racing and eventing. Her family has been in it for generations, and her brother Andrew continues the practice today. But for a girl, it was truly a man's world--and she earned her stripes competing and eventually broadcasting about the ins and outs of an insider world which she knows intimately.
Fascinating to have glimpses of the Queen and Paul Mellon. She weaves the stories around the dogs and horses she grew up with.
Given the poor post position she drew in life initially, Miss Balding winds up in the winner's circle.

I didn't really know much about Clare Balding before I saw her on "Graham Norton." She talked about this book and it sounded interesting. It was a fun read. It gave me a glimpse into a life that I would not otherwise have seen, along with anecdotes about famous people. It is great to be able to easily download a book when I hear about it rather than waiting and hoping that I will find it in the store--or that I will remember it. I love reading books on my Kindle.

On the face of it, broadcaster Clare Balding had a privileged upbringing; the daughter of renowned trainer Ian Balding, she lived in a house attached to major stables in Berkshire, England, and had the run of the place, as well as the opportunity to ride horses whenever she wanted.

As MY ANIMALS AND OTHER FAMILY shows, however, her life didn't really turn out like that. Her father was so obsessed with his work that he had little time for her and her brother; while her mother tried her best, she still could not give the young Clare the kind of affection the young girl so obviously craved. The only way Clare could find fulfillment was through a series of close associations with animals - especially horses and boxer dogs. MY ANIMALS AND OTHER FAMILY offers an honest account of the way she had to come to terms with not only loving the animals, but also acknowledging that their lifespans were infinitely shorter than those of human beings. Death became an ever-present fact that she had to endure. Sometimes Balding's accounts are highly poignant, especially on the occasion when the horse she was riding had a hemorrhage and died soon afterwards.

Despite her love of animals, Balding - like many young children - had her moments of naughtiness, where she did things that seemed like a good idea at the time, but which turned out badly in the end. Her description of the occasion when her younger brother and she went out to a dog-kennel to paint it, and ended up covered in paint themselves, is particularly hilarious. Nonetheless she comes across as basically well-meaning and eager to please.

As she grew older, Balding contemplated a career as a jockey.

Clare Balding is that most rare of writers who can connect with her readers and make them believe that they also did grow up..... possibly as one of the author's siblings. I felt instant recognition with many of her stories. Needless to say, it was a real page-turner and I devoured the book in 2 sittings....a record for me because, though I am a highly intelligent person, I cannot finish reading a book unless it 100% holds my complete attention. This one did.
