Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Those who live with and love animals dread the moment when their beloved companions will leave them. Smith, an animal communicator for more than 30 years, and author of two books on talking with the creatures, provides a unique and detailed account, from the animals' perspective, on the ways they transition from the physical to the spiritual realm. Smith discusses the timing of their departure, their feelings about living in the spirit realm, and reincarnation. Stories that recount individual experiences with animals on earth as well as the spirit realm are most of the book, including ones about animals who want their humans to know that they didn't suffer in dying, that they may have actually orchestrated their death for a particular reason, that they forgive any wrongs or that they are planning to come back in another form. Perhaps most helpful is the chapter in which animals counsel their human friends not to grieve for them but to seek joy instead. For those new to animal communication, Smith includes a short instructional chapter. Readers open to Smith's claims about animal communication or who grieve departed furry friends will find much in these pages to offer comfort and hope. (Jan.)

Review

"Penelope beautifully and humbly travels the spiritual life and death span of animal beings, discovering, to no surprise, that theirs is much the same as that of human beings." - Jeri Ryan Ph.D., clinical psychologist and animal communicator.

"The most beautiful and moving spiritual adventure I have ever encountered. What an affirmation of the miracle of life!" -- Patricia Graham

"Penelope shares benefi cial, though somewhat controversial, insights. Her wisdom and compassion shine through this profound book. Read it and awaken to healing perspectives about our kindred spirits and how we can all live together in pure love." -- Allen M. Schoen, D.V.M., author of Kindred Spirits

More About the Author

All her life, Penelope Smith loved animals and communicated with them. Now, she didn't just talk aloud to them but transmitted her thoughts and feelings non-verbally or telepathically, and understood what they communicated to her by receiving their thoughts and feelings. Animals, both domestic and wild, have been her friends, confidantes, and teachers for as long as she can remember.

As a spiritual counselor in 1971, Smith discovered that animals could be relieved of emotional traumas and other problems through the same counseling techniques that helped humans. The details of her amazing counseling session with her first animal client, a black and white cat named Peaches, is told in her book, "Animal Talk," first published in 1978, and now in its sixth edition. The profound results of her adventures in communicating and counseling with animals and their people are found throughout her subsequent books, audio, and video publications. The training and experience that have contributed to her success are her educational background, with bachelor's and master's degrees in the social sciences; years of training and experience in human counseling, nutrition, and holistic body energy balancing methods; research into animal nutrition, anatomy, behavior, and care; plus the firsthand education from the thousands of animals she has contacted.

Smith's visionary work as the leading pioneer in the field whose name she originated, "interspecies telepathic communication," has been featured in newspaper and magazine articles, such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Natural Home, and Woman's World, numerous books, and on radio and television (Coast to Coast, NPR Weekend America, Fox Channel News...). She has developed tried-and-true telepathic communication techniques, complementing ancient wisdom and modern scientific knowledge. Her methods foster people's ability to understand and communicate with animals on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. A legendary teacher for over three decades, she has helped launch the careers of numerous professional animal communicators. People have affectionately called her the "mother (and now the grandmother) of interspecies communication." Smith feels that the sacred connection we make through telepathic communication with other species is essential for human wholeness. She believes that everyone is born with the power to communicate with other species, and that, although it is long lost for most people, it can be regained for the benefit of all beings on Earth.

Smith is the author of the popular, classic books on the subject, "Animal Talk" (available in many languages), "When Animals Speak," and, "Animals in Spirit." She is the founding editor of "Species Link" magazine since 1990. Her audio recordings include the "Animal Communication Mastery Series," "Animal Healing Power," "Animal Spirit Call," and the "How to Communicate with Animals Basic Course." Her DVDs include an overview of animal communication, "Telepathic Communication with Animals" and a retreat at a wild animal sanctuary, "Wild Animals Speak."

Smith lives in a log cabin in the Ponderosa pines of Prescott, Arizona with her animal family.

Penelope Smith's most recent book, "Animals in Spirit", is a beautiful, heartfelt, and sensitive guide to animals' perspectives on the death and dying process, as well their experiences in the spiritual dimension after leaving the physical body. In sharing her communications with her own animal companions, those of her clients, and in the wonderful contributions of experiences from many other animal communicators and their clients, Penelope addresses the experience of death from the animals' viewpoints, and also sensitively discusses the grief process for the animals' human companions. I especially loved the section on reincarnation, and the various ways that animals may choose to return to their people in a different body. This book made me laugh, cry, and rejoice at the variety and depth of animal wisdom concerning death. It opened my heart to deeper places of love and trust that love never dies, and to the knowledge that the energy of the connection with our animal friends is eternal.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has loved and lost an animal. There is a wonderful exercise for helping people to connect with the spirits of their animal friends who have died, as well as a beautiful grief and memorial ritual contributed by animal communicator Barbara Janelle. Throughout, the heartwarming communications from the animals to their human friends assures us that death is most often a natural transition for animals to a different state of being, without the fear and cultural baggage that we humans so often associate with it. In this, the animals are our teachers, as they show us how to accept the death process as a part of the eternal continuum of life.

This book is helping me cope with the loss of my cat. It explains so well why animals choose their passing, why they are here in our relationships, and best yet that they are still around us after passing.

A book for anyone that has helped an animal or has had a animal transition in their lives this is the book to read. The stories in it helped to heal my heart from the recent experience of helping my soul-mate cat PC (Perfect Cat) transition. Deeply moving and a well written book.

Simply a beautiful book, that has more specific information about the purpose for pets being in our lives, how they feel about us and what happens next than any other book I have read. If you have had a incredibly deep connection with your animals - this book will help you realize why that is so and the importance in our own spiritual growth. I am still grieving the loss of two of my dogs from years ago, though the book made me cry numerous times - it was incredibly comforting. This book will validate that you were correct, your dog, cat, bird all have wonderful souls and are here to teach, heal and love us and guides us how to connect to them in their afterlife.

Do you believe any of this is possible?

A chicken deliberately dies so she can come back as a hamster and live in her human's house.

Some people can communicate with animals, both dead and alive, telepathically as fully as one would talk to another human being.

Animal spirits can decide when and where to be reborn. They may be reborn as the same species or inhabit the body of a totally different species. In one anecdote we read about a woman's mother coming back as a horse.

Some animals are hit by cars on purpose so that they can travel to the spiritual realm.

We even learn in this book that animals who want to see what it's like to be human, come back as a human born with a terminal disease so they can try out humanity for a short time.

And then there's the cat who escaped from its yard so it could be killed by a fox, a fox who faked a limp to attract the attention of the cat's owner and then explain to the owner what had happened. After the fox-human conversation, the fox mysteriously loses its limp.

If you find all these goings-on credible, then this book may be for you. As for this Potato Head, all of these other world shenanigans seem too far fetched and incredible. I read this book seeking some reassurance and confirmation that animals have surviving souls.

This book of the "fantastic" wasn't reassuring to me though I do appreciate the author's respect for and love of animals.

Very well written, and really opened my eyes about the spirit world. I always believed in the spirit world, but after reading this book, and communicating with our dearly beloved cat who passed on to the spirit world, I now KNOW there IS a spirit world.

Anyone who has had a pet pass on to the spirit world, should read this book.

I will definely buy more books written by Penelope Smith in the future.

This book has offered comfort in the midst of feeling overwhelmed and distraught over the very recent loss of our beautiful 12-year old Golden Retriever "Max." I was actually searching for another book on the topic of dealing with pet loss when I ran across this one. I knew there was a spirit world for our precious friends, but this book answered many of the questions I had been asking, and showed me how to communicate to my beloved dog. I only wish I would have found the book a little sooner, before he passed vs. afterward.
