Grade 2-5-These entries effectively fulfill the series' goal to offer an understanding of art "with lots of practical step-by-step projects for the young artist." Each spread features a project with clear instructions-both visual and written-and a list of materials needed; it also highlights a work of art in a particular style or medium. In Animals, drawing realistic horses is accomplished with a number of geometric shapes and is illustrated by George Stubbs's 1771 painting, Horse and Rider. While Picasso used plaster, wood, and clay to make his Goat, children are instructed to make their own model using cardboard, tape, and foil. In People various art forms including collage, caricatures, carvings, mosaics, and abstracts represent the paintings of such well-known artists as Picasso, Monet, Degas, and van Gogh. The format is appealing and colorful. Even if readers do not pursue the artistic techniques, they'll still learn much about the masters and their work.
