K-Gr 3-Two books that focus on the habitats and characteristics that certain animals share. Using controlled vocabulary, Butterfield introduces beginning readers to some common and uncommon creatures. Trees includes the squirrel, marmoset, macaw, ocelot, and others; Plains and Prairies considers the giraffe, termite, vulture, and agama lizard. Each animal is presented on a double-page spread illustrated with two colorful photographs. The first picture fills the entire left-hand page while the second, smaller photo breaks up the four-to-five lines of text on the facing page. Each book provides a simple map of the world with icons locating the animals discussed. Unfortunately, the placement of these icons may not give children a clear idea of the animal's range. For example, the symbol for the woodpecker is seen on the Canadian border near the state of Washington, and again on the border near Wisconsin, despite the fact that this bird can also be found in other areas of North America.
