Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This encyclopedia offers a thorough introduction to the animal kingdom for young readers, starting with a chapter discussing various animal behaviors, life cycles, and habitats. The book is arranged by the major groups of animals: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Color coding along the edge of the page allows readers to quickly find their desired section. Within each section, students are introduced to the key features of the groups, families, and species that follow. For example, the section on mammals begins with discussions on such topics as being born alive and having hair. Following the introduction are profiles of specific creatures with information about habitat, geographic location, size, life span, and conservation status. “Fact Files” highlight specific information. Young readers will especially enjoy the graphics that indicate the relative size of animals compared to the average human. Also appealing for young readers are the speech bubbles that appear in some of the larger photographs. For example, the bubble “I’m ready to go fishing!” accompanies the image of a chimpanzee, along with an explanation that chimps have the ability to make and use tools to fish for ants and termites. The highlight of this book is certainly the stunning visual layout. The color photographs are vibrant and abundant. This engaging encyclopedia is certain to appeal to browsers and researchers alike and would be a welcome addition to any school and public library reference collection. Grades K-4. --Maren Ostergard

This book is a feast for the inner biologist within you. It is comprehensive without going overboard. It covers many families of animals that other books might miss, and creatively packs in the information without feeling heavy. The pictures are stunning and awe one with the miracle of life. There is much information masterfully presented in a way that will fascinate equally a 4 year old as a well read adult. When I browsed this book in the store I was thinking, "do I really need to get yet another book about animals?" but this book wowed me, and my family and I are glad I purchased it.

Prepare to enjoy this feast, one page at a time!

I wanted a general encylcopedia that covered all the basics in the animal world for my kids. This is THE book. My 5-year-old loves it. Everything in here is in color, beatufiully printed and arranged, and there are numerous photographs on each page. It's interesting for adults, too. My personal favorites are the deep sea creatures like the viperfish and giant sea crab. My daughter loves the spider and horse pages.

The sections include Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, and Invertebrates. Each section has dozens of sub-sections about many categories of animals. It has numerous two-page spreads showcasing different beetles, sea shells, moths and butterflies, eggs, and etc. aside from the informative pages. The informative pages are packed with beautiful images and short descriptions of different species and sub-species.

My daughter wants me to write, "This is the best book ever." I think it's an excellent choice for a general-purpose animal encyclopedia.

This is a great book I got it yesterday. The photos are beautiful, clear and show a lot of detail. There are plenty of facts through out this book. It's a good hard back book if you love all kinds of animals. It is very well done. It could be interesting for grammer school aged kids on up to adults.
